Description
Have fun enjoying the many different styles that compose this great bouldering venue in Boylston, MA. Just a 10-15 minute drive from Worcester and an easy hike into the forest lead to a series of excellent boulder problems on gritty Massachusetts granite. A high concentration of large glacial erratic boulders line the small hills along the shores of Rocky Pond and host everything from roof cracks and tenuous slabs to burly compression problems and technical mantels.
A high volume of hard lines exist in this area, and there is still significant room for development of difficult lines close to Worcester, likely upwards of ten double digit boulder problems of varying styles. You'll find the highest quantity of climbs on a few major boulders, Shoreline Goliath, Barrel Boulder, Extraterrestrial Boulder, and the Arrowhead with many more blocks each containing a few problems of their own.
My top picks (ordered by grade) are "Wormhole" V1/2, "Nightcall" V2, "Killing of a Giant" V3, "Cyberknife SDS" V3+, "Zan's Crack" V4, "The Archer" V4+, "Hikikomori" V4/5, "Saving Face" V5, "The Barrel" V7, “Slate Lines” V7, "Nine Levels of Nothing" V8, "The Goliath" V9, "Size Doesn't Matter" V10, "Goliath Low" V11
Getting There
Rocky Pond can be accessed via a pull off on the south side of Green Street in Boylston as the road makes a significant bend. The pulloff has room for ~5 cars if parked responsibly.
The GPS pin is in the exact location of the parking area for Rocky Pond.
To access all boulders, use the single track trail that heads south from the trailhead. The trail quickly dumps onto a large cut through the woods. Follow the path of destruction for a total of ~6 minutes where the trail curves sharply to the right and up a steep hill. To reach all boulders besides the Barrel Boulder, stay left onto a single track trail. You will immediately merge with another small trail (staying right). Follow the trail straight for a couple minutes. First you will see Cracked Boulder on the right, just beyond that will be Extraterrestrial Boulder on the left. Here the trail forks, either straight or right. Heading straight will quickly bring you to the Shoreline Goliath (the 30' x 60' x 30' behemoth). Veering right leads to a well-shaded boulder field home to many boulders (Mr. Clean, Arrowhead, Logging, Submarine, etc.) and eventually the back entrance to the Barrel Boulder.
To reach the Barrel Boulder, stay right up the hill on the logging path. At the top of the hill, continue on the logging path another minute until the path forks. Stay left going downhill, and at the bottom of the hill you should see the incredible twin boulders.
