Description
Relatively popular 1-3 pitch sport climbing on a North/West facing wall that is close to Gardena pass. due to its position it is a nice area to climb in the morning on hot days. It seeps after rain and early in the season. The taller cliffs to the right (extending toward the Murfreit waterfall) are known as the Frea Alpin sector, and feature a number of upper-moderate (UIAA 5/6) routes of around 4-5 pitches. Frea is divided into five distinct sectors (right to left as looking from Gardena Pass toward Torre di Murfeit): Reckter Pfeiler (Stretched Pillar) with Bittersuss e Fingerkraut (Bittersweet and Herb) below it, with Mondviole (Violet Moon) to its left, Himmelsleiter (Stairway to Heaven) above it, and lastly, the longish routes on Sonnentau (Sun Dew). The Sonnentua Sector has routes up to six pitches long.
Getting There
Drive from Selva up the Passo Gardena road past the Hotel Gerard. A few hundred meters past the hotel, the road levels out, takes a left turn and follows the cliffline. It is a total of five switchback/hairpin turns from the pass (about a half Km prior to the pass). Near the end of this flat section there's parking for ~5 cars or so on the right, and other possible parking spots above and below this location. Hike up a scree shoulder of sorts and follow a partially cairned path through bushes to reach the Bittersuss e Fingerkraut Sector. You'll reach a junction in the trail with one that heads up a steep brushy gash. This leads up to the Himmelsleiter and the Reckter Pfeiler Sectors. If you hike left you'll encounter the Mondviole and the Sonnentau Sectors.
