Description Suggest change

The Sella group is a sector within the Dolomites that consists of a large plateau with many climbs scattered all around the cliff below the palateau, including the popular routes at Sella pass (Sella towers, Piz Ciavazes), the enormous Sass Pordoi accessed from just above Canazei and from Pordoi pass, the Piz Boe routes, the Piz da Lec accessable from the lifts in Corvara and the Tridentina area with its very popular Via Ferrata just below Gardena pass. There are enough routes in the Sella area to fill several entire seasons of climbing.

Consequently, due to the many hundreds of routes and all the subpeaks, for organizational purposes this mountain massif has be subdivided into 4 sub-areas:

Passo Sella area - The South Western aspects of the group extending from Val Lasties (the valley to the right of Piz Ciavazes) up over Passo Sella and back around the Western side to Passo Gardena.

Passo Pordoi area - The South Eastern aspects of the group extending from Val Lasties (the left side of Piz Pordoi) up over Passo Pordoi and down to the village of Arraba.

Corvara to Arraba area - The Eastern side of the group extending from the Valley floor in Corvara up to Arraba.

Passo Gardena to Corvara area - The northern side of the group from the top of Passo Gardena down to Corvara (note the the routes on the north side of the road coming down from the pass are a separate mountain group and are contained in the Odle group).

Getting There Suggest change

Drive East from Bolzano or West from Cortina to Canazei (a nice area to base camp). From town you will be looking at Piz Ciavazes and up towards Sella pass. This is the Sella group. It is completely surrounded by a circular road that crosses multiple passes. Small villages exist all around the plateau where you can get food, beer, a room or find camping.
