Description

This small crag is located along the edge of the Fremstavatn lake at about 140 meters in elevation. The cliff is easily accessed by driving up the well graded F985 dirt road from Highway 1. The road and cliff are behind Hotel Smyrlabjorg, which is shown on Google Maps and would be the closest place to stay. The lake is part of a hydroelectric project and the lake and crag were in Game of Thrones seasons 6 & 7 (see wolfgangsfilmlocationguide.…). Routes done thus far are described from left (closest to the lake) to right (toward Highway 1 and the ocean).

If you have an SUV, it's worth driving the 16km up F985. You'll be deposited onto the Skalafellsjokull glacier at the top!

A short distance south on Highway 1 is the basalt crag of Fallastakkanöf. About 45 minutes further south on Highway 1 is Hnappavellir.

Getting There

The cliff is easily accessed by driving up the well graded F985 dirt road from Highway 1. The road and cliff are behind Hotel Smyrlabjorg.

FROM THE SOUTH

Starting at the intersection of Highway 1 and the dirt road that leads to Hnappavellir:

-Drive northeast on Highway 1 about 62.1km (toward Hofn).

-Turn left on F985, a well-graded gravel road. From the intersection of Highway 1 and F985, you can see a hydroelectric project on the hillside in front of you.

-Drive about 2.5km up F985, passing the hydroelectric power station, until you see Fremstavatn lake on your right.

-Turn right off F985 and follow a single track road about 130 meters (400 feet) to a parking spot below the crag. The coordinates of this parking spot are 64.220413, -15.726583.

FROM THE NORTH

Starting at the intersection of Highways 1 and 99 just north of Hofn:

-Drive south on Highway 1 about 40km.

-Turn right on F985, a well-graded gravel road. From the intersection of Highway 1 and F985, you can see a hydroelectric project on the hillside in front of you.

-Drive about 2.5km up F985, passing the hydroelectric power station, until you see Fremstavatn lake on your right.

-Turn right off F985 and follow a single track road about 130 meters (400 feet) to a parking spot below the crag. The coordinates of this parking spot are 64.220413, -15.726583.
