The Great Cleft

The Cleft is easily spotted on the approach drive to Hinkey Summit. The rock is pleasantly pocketed and perhaps more solid than the rock found on the Hinkey Hop (with the obvious arch to the left of Solid Silver).

Getting There

Leave Winnemucca driving north on Melarkey Street to highway 95 and follow signs for Paradise Valley. Once you reach this very pleasant little cowboy town continue north towards Hinkey Summit. Great camping is available 2-3 miles past the Hinkey Summit (almost 8000 feet) at the Lye Creek Campground.

The Cleft is the big broad west facing wall well below Hinkey Summit and passes through two drainages to the base of the wall.
