Description
Seoul is one of the biggest metropolis cities in the world with a surprisingly rich climbing history. While the sport climbing in the area would hardly be considered world class, they are well maintained, fun, and always crowded with Koreans gawking and screaming unsolicited beta to you. There is a plethora of granite and great multipitch climbing in the northern part of Seoul in Bukhansan National Park, where Yvon Chouinard established 2 classics, Chouinard A and Chouinard B.
Outside of real rock, there are public artificial walls ($2 for a day pass) and many bouldering gyms that can appease a hard training session or someone just looking to pull on some plastic.
Don't want to climb? Check out the vibrant city life. Lotte tower for some world class shopping, gwangjang market for some street food, Itaewon/Hongdae to get sloppy, or have a bike ride and picnic by the Han River. Seoul is fucking awesome.
Getting There
Get into Seoul internationally through Incheon International Airport (ICN). The regional airport is Gimpo Airport and The KTX Stations are Seoul Station (above the Han River) and Suseo Station (below the river).
Transportation: Pick up a transit card at any convenient store for 4 bucks, which can be used for any subway or bus in the country (outside of interprovince buses). Taxis are cheap and plentiful.
Google maps is not a great option in Korea. Download Kakao maps or Naver maps for better navigation.
Lodging: Mapo-gu is a gentrified area in the Western part of Seoul close to the airports with great nightlife and restaurants (Hapjeong, Hongdae). If you're looking for more of a foreign scene, stay near Yongsan, where the international scene in HBC or Itaewon is vibrant and fun. If you're looking for boujee, Gangnam or Insa-dong is your area.
