Description
Although the Matrix is closer to the parking lot than any other North Shore crag is, it is perhaps the least-known and least-used crag there.
It is a short wall, with climbs only about 20-25', and because of the lack of use, expect dirt, moss, and loose rock. On the plus side, it is in a narrow "canyon" formed by a cliff and a large boulder, so it gets little sun, making it good for climbing in the hot weather that dominates here from May through October.
Currently, there is one sport route on the wall (5.7), and there are three toprope routes from 5.9+ to 5.11b. There are some bouldering problems as well, and there is a crack that goes on trad gear.

Getting There
1. Probably the most likely way for most-- Take the main access trail down, but do not cross the stream as you would to access most North Shore Crags. Instead, look to the left for a use trail leading toward rock outcrops. Watch out for deadfall, poison ivy, venomous snakes, and even some old barbed wire.
2. You can also rap down to Unleashed Wall or Dude Wall if you know where the anchors are, and then you can approach the Matrix from its other end. Be aware that the trail between Unleashed and Dude is sometimes overgrown. Rapping down Unleashed, climbing there and at Dude and at the Matrix, and then hiking out or topping out from the Matrix actually makes a nice day at crags that rarely get a lot of traffic.
3. A third way requires a little more effort but is more direct and avoids all the brush. From the parking lot, get on the trail but instead of going down when it forks, go left. Locate a flat slab at the edge of a cliff. This slab is directly above the Matrix. To the right you can see the anchors for the sport route. On the flat ground directly above the anchors is a large tree. Sling the tree, rappel down, and retrieve your anchor when you leave.
