Description

In the Late 1980’s Ken Stanton and Robyn Madgewick found themselves on top of a remote, blocky, outcrop. From here the Calistoga Gliders soared overhead occasionally (apparently close enough that one could “Moon” the Pilot and Passengers! ) And so Moon Rock was named... Located just past the farthest reaches of the Far Side, yet still within view of the summit pinnacle of nearby classic route “Lichen Rash”. Today this formation offers four bolted sport routes on high quality stone.

Getting There

The approach for some might feel like you’ve hiked to the moon and back by the end of the day ! Once one completes the scenic approach the area provides enough offerings to keep you busy for a few hours... Follow the approach information to the Far Side as mentioned and surmount all the main formations around to the right and up from the Shute Mills area. An obvious landmark is the summit tower/area of “Lichen Rash” also called “Kola” a popular must do climb up the Far Side’s highest upper tower. Approaching Moon Rock requires hiking UP, BEHIND, and slightly DOWN the back side of the the Kola Tower. Upon reaching the base area of “Far Side Gallery” continue traversing the slope to the west 250 ft to reach the base of the South-facing Moon Rock. Approach time from the parking area is 1+ hour. The area gets warm afternoon sun in the winter months.
