Description
The formations northwest of the Chapel Sant Benet that are south of the 1156 meter high "l'Elephant. The major formations (L to R) are:La Panaxa del Bisbe, Miranda de Sant Benet, Roca d'en Barbera, La Prenyada, Contrafort de la Prenyada and El Gat. Antoni Cugat's book lists some dozen or more smaller formations; please feel free to add any of these you've climbed on.
Getting There
NOTE: There is a large "Monestir de Sant Benet" located about 3-4 km north of Montserrat, this is NOT the place we are going to. The Sant Benet refered to here is a small chapel-like structure about 1/2 kn Nortwest of Montserrat.
Two Ways to get into the general area:
(NOTE: For directions to the l'Elefanet ('little elephant') see the directions specific to that sub-area.)
1) The "stairmaster" - walk through the main square (past the water fountains) and take the main path to the right leading to the Placa Santa Anna. Just before you actually reach the P.Santa Anna there is a 4-way trail junction. If you are headed for La Panxa del Bisbe take the left (trail towards Pla dels Ocells and on to Sant Jeroni.) For most other formations, take the right hand trail, towards Sant Benet. In a short while ( 200 m, 150 yds) take the left towards Sant Benet "chapel", which then soon splits. The left branch goes to Sant Benet itself, and also the formations: el Gat, Contrafort de la Prenyada, , La Prenyada, Roca d'en Barberi, Miranda de Sant Benet, and La Panxa. (plus numerous other smaller formations)
2) Take the Sant Joan Funicular, then take the main path to the north towards Sant Jeroni. At the first elbow in the trail ( about 100m / 50-60 yds, take the path (unmarked) to the right that immediately swings north (left) towards Pla dels Ocells. [NOTE: This is also where the path to Pistatxo takes off, take care not to follow THAT path as it goes down to the right. ] (It is also possible to pick up the path to Pla dels Ocells about 100m further along the main path).
The path from the "elbow" descends gently (you may see the aforementioned side path come in on your left) and you'll come to fork, take the left fork and continue with a slight uphill, then passes the Trencabarrals formation and continues on to Pla dels Ocells. (see map) Take a "hard right" onto the main trail towards Placa de Santa Anna (and Montserrat itself) and in about 100 -120 m ( 60-70 yds) be on the lookout for the path to Sant Benet on your left. This path first takes you past the formation of La Panxa del Bisbe ("La Panaxa").
