Description
**13,287 ft (4,050 m)**
Mt Goethe (pronounced gur-tah) is the highpoint on the eastern end of the Glacier Divide, a ridgeline running perpendicular to the main Sierra Crest just south of Piute Pass. Mt Goethe is particularly impressive for its snow and ice couloirs rising from the Goethe Glacier in the cirque on it's northern side. A few of the lower-angled chutes have been skiied.
Getting There
To reach the northern side, hike up Piute Pass from the North Lake trailhead. Shortly after Piute Pass hang a left towards Muriel Lake, skirting around its east side. From here the next two miles are the crux - rugged boulder-ridden shorelines and seemingly endless talus fields leading up to the Goethe Glacier. Total distance ~8 miles.
To reach the easy southern slopes, hike over Lamarck Col down into Darwin Canyon then wrapping around north into a hidden basin with some large unnamed lakes. 8+ miles.
