Description
A 100' wall divided halfway up by a prominent ledge. This wall is frequently used by mountaineering groups for practice, and has 5 staples on top for anchors, along with a set of chains.
You can access the ledge that divides the wall from the left side. There are several belay bolts along the ledge and at the far end you can set a TR for the two rightmost routes, just be careful doing so.
Getting There
follow directions for the sunset slabs, taking the sunset trail to the top of the slabs. Once on top of the sunset slabs, hike southeast along a trail for about 50 yards. this trail joins the left side of the wall.
Alternatively, you can park mid-way up the Erie summit road and take trail #239 southwest through the trees for about 10 minutes, taking a right onto the sunset trail for 150 feet, and the first left which takes you down steeply and around to the top left side of Mountaineer's wall. this is also known as the west buttress trail, and is seldom used.
