Description
Bangkok and Central Thailand - While generally not known as a climbing destination but rather a transit city for international climbers to other destinations such as Krabi, Chiang Mai, or even Thakkek, there has been a surge of growth in the climbing community of both ex-pats and Thais in the recent years. Currently, with continuing development, there’s certainly a case to be made that Central Thailand is growing to become a destination worthy of any visiting climbers.
There are currently 6 climbing areas within 2-3 hours of Bangkok;
- Saraburi province has Nam Pha Pa Yai (NPPY) and Muaklek Cliff. NPPY has the most number of sport routes from 5s to 8b; all within walking distance from onsite accommodation. Muaklek probably has the best quality of hard single pitches (the majority being 5.12 routes), and due to its position, it is by far the coolest crag and usually very pleasant to climb at even on the hottest summer day.
- Petchaburi province with Khao Yoi (rebolted with Ti Glue-in as of 2019 by TCDA) and Khao Iko
- Lopburi province has Khao Chin Lae which offers many multi-pitch routes to the top of an actual summit surrounded by sunflower fields (during the right season).
- Kanchanaburi province is currently seeing the newest of route development since 2019 and has 3 known climbing areas. Turtle Home Crag, Pump Mountain, and Hughill.
