Independence Peak is a fun half-day mountain just a short walk from the parking area at the end of Onion Valley Road outside of Independence. A good warm-up for your larger objective beyond Kearsarge Pass perhaps, but a worthy objective in its own right. A climber's mountain, Independence Peak has no walk-up route to the summit, which is reached by picking your way across a 100-yard ridgeline of broken rock with incredible exposure on either side.

Getting There

Park in the day-use and backpacker lot, then walk into the campground and take the Robinson Lake trail to about 9,700 feet before leaving the trail to get to the mountain. Independence Peak is in full view to the southeast from the moment you begin walking until you get to the talus.
