Description
Originally called Shelby Hill, Mount Iron is most known as a popular hike around Wanaka. The climbing areas are all along the Eastern side of the hill and the rock can be less than ideal. Mostly steep, all sport, with easy and close access from town. Can easily walk to from town, or get a couple of pitches in before/after work. This rock clearly takes A LOT of cleaning to result in good routes, but the routes that see traffic provide interesting movement on varied grips.
Getting There
The shortest approach is from the East side, park in Albert Town and access it from the Mt Iron loop trail.
for a longer walk but shorter drive, head from Wanaka east out of town on 84 towards puzzling world. Then park across from puzzling word, find the entrance gate to Mt Iron loop, and follow the loop trail east for a short distance. When the loop splits, take the right hand of the fork towards Albert Town. Walk another couple of minutes and you'll see the crags on your left. Look for well traveled paths to get to the base. The first crag you come to is Next Best Thing. Keep walking North along the fence for another 100 meters to the paths leading to lower, middle, and upper wall.
