Mandalay is a quiet, mid-sized city that sits shoulder to shoulder with the limestone hills east of town. Mandalay is the home of Myanmar's first sport climbing at Waterfall Hill (Yaedagon Taung). Steve Davis initiated the first bolting effort and established the earliest routes on what is now known as Steve Wall. From what I understand, his efforts catalyzed the creation of the Technical Climbing Cub Myanmar (TCCM). Steve then brought Tyler Hoffart who finished bolting Steve Wall and bolted the entirety of Fire Wall and Monk's Life Wall with Winko.
There are several hostels to choose from in Mandalay for varying price ranges. You can use taxis or rent a motorbike or bicycle to transport yourself around. Motorbike cost from 8,000MMK to 15,000MMK (1USD is 1,000MMK) per day, and they can be rented at many of the hostels.
If you have a bigger party, you can rent a truck or van at the bus station. A day trip to Waterfall Hill and back should cost you around 30,000 MMK.
If you are in Myanmar and want to connect with the climbing community, check out the Myanmar Rock Community FB Group.
Mandalay RCC is climbing every Friday&Saturday from 8am to 1pm.
From Tyler Hoffart's Blog on the bolting of Waterfall Hill:
On January 3rd, 2012, amid amped up music and caffeinated veins at the Spy House in Mpls, Steve Davis said, "You might be my guy for this." He was talking about bolting the first-ever sport crag in Myanmar. He was talking about flying me there to do it. For a month.
I threw my coffee cup at the ceiling. I punched the cosmos with a giant gulp.
I grabbed Steve by the metaphorical collar.
"SIGN ME UP DUDE. GET ME TO MYANMAR!"
