Description

Hail Vader is a new cliff at Rumney and it's location is best described as upper, upper, Darth Vader. Several of us spent an entire day cleaning this new crag with hours of on and off hail storms, hence the name. It has the same south facing orientation as Jimmy Cliff and Darth Vader Wall. There are 3 trad routes on the cliff 5.2, 5.3, 5.4 all about 30 ft in length. This would be a great cliff for beginner trad climbers if it wasn't sketchy to get to the base and right above a popular wall. Gear placements are very easy. The rock is super solid and the climbs are very fun for their grade. There are no anchors at the top of these routes.

Getting There

Park in the Main Cliff Parking Lot. Hike the shortcut trail past Darth Vader wall, uphill, then to the right of Waimea. The top of Hail Vader is a common lookout just below Jimmy Cliff and is best approached as described. You can access the bottom of the routes by scrambling down the left side of the cliff. *You can access the bottom of Hail Vader by way of Upper Darth Vader. Hike the thin ledge and traverse across the anchors of "Pee Wee's Playhouse (5.4)". This approach is not recommended.*

These climbs have already grown very dirty, cracks are filled with plants and dirt, and the tree at the base has grown large enough that its branches get in the way of the start of the climbs. There really isn't any reason to go here unless it gets cleaned up again. Oct 19, 2016

Found it, pretty fun! Apr 20, 2015
I haven't checked out this cliff yet, but it's important to let the community know that while reasonable cleaning of a cliff is allowed, excavation at the bottom or top of the cliff is prohibited by the forest service, and cleaning is prohibited where endangered and sensitive plant species are found.

In cases like this please talk with someone with experience, check-in with the RCA or the forest service to make sure your cleaning project isn't inadvertently destroying native plant species.

We need to make sure we are following guidelines established in our climbing management plan.

Thank you! Apr 30, 2014

Don't you guys think the scramble down to the base is sketchy for a beginner, especially if it recieved any traffic so the thin soil came loose? My impression years ago was "nice little easy climbs potential, but in an awkward spot. Apr 18, 2013

Hey guys could you take the Grade V rating off of these climbs? I for some reason don't foresee these climb ever requiring an multiple day effort ;)

Thanks for cleaning these up, looks like a good place to bring new climbers or little kids. Please no bolts though. There are a lot of little craglets around the mountain side like this that could yield some routes as long as they are done like this. Cleaned well, and no bolts. Apr 18, 2013

"A good top managed site for groups." - Just make sure everybody is aware they are right above The other Vaders, where there are likely people sprawled about.

If you are looking for a nice new beginner crag, there is a slab up above the overland trail to Orange Crush that I always thought would make a good Kinder Wall. It is a few hundred yards off the trail from east of Bonsai I think. I haven't been by it in a while so don't remember exactly. It doesn't require any scrambling to get to, has a good safe base and it is easy to get to the top. It looks easy to clean and isn't a tree and bush fest like some of the "routes" that have been going in lately. Apr 18, 2013

I climbed this cliff on my way to Orange Crush last fall because I was too lazy to hike around. It was pretty filthy- must've been quite the effort to clean it. Apr 17, 2013
