Description

Münzfels is probably the second most significant tower in the Trifels area and lies to the immediate south of the most significant tower, Jungturm. The two are separated by a narrow gap which takes the form of a chimney near the ground. Jungturm is taller and skinnier and Münzfels is wider and stouter.

Today you may encounter evidence of serious modifications to the rock that occurred in medeival times when it served as part of the fortification system on the ridge between Trifels and Sharfenberg Castle. For example, on the standard route you will step through a carved out window into the tower, climb some stairs, and then do some rock climbing up a crack to ascend a portion where wood planks would have existed in the past.

The easiest route to the summit, Normalweg, is 5.6. In total there are approximately two dozen routes up to 5.13.

Getting There

From the Trifels parking lot follow the obvious trail south. This is the opposite direction that the the majority of the tourists will be heading to visit Trifels Castle. After about 10 minutes, sandstone towers will begin to appear next to the trail. Take a picture or two with you to help in identifying the towers. Jungturm is a good reference point because is pretty striking. Münzfels is directly south of Jungturm.
