Description

IF YOU ARE GOING TO DEEP WATER SOLO CHECK THE TIDE INFORMATION OR YOU MAY GO WHEN YOU CAN'T DWS!

Ha Long Bay is made up of thousands of limestone karats towers. Overall the Bay is still in need of much development. However, the Vietnam government is not very supportive of rock climbing. Deep water soloing is currently tolerated but installation of bolts must be cleared through the government.

Getting There

Ha Long Bay is accessed by most climbers from Cat Ba Town via a boat tour scheduled through SloPony. The boat trip into the bay costs at least $20 per person if 8 people are signed up to go out and goes up from there.

Hello climbers,

It is now on sale at the Asia Outdoors shop on Cat Ba Island and on the major Amazon sites (17 GBP, 20 Dollars, 20 Euro). The 140 page guidebook contains more than 120 sport climbing routes on 13 crags, from 4a to 8a, more than 230 deep water solo lines on 24 cliffs, from 4a to 7c+ and 30 pages with additional information (climbing pics, maps, access info, rock climbing history, climate and geology, and other useful information).

Asia Outdoors has been busy opening up some new crags in Tung Thit, one of the many small islands in Lan Ha Bay (the less traveled sister of Halong Bay). Tung Thit is home to “The Amphitheatre”, a 50 meter crag featuring 10 bolted routes ranging in grade from 6b to 8a. A new DWS area was discovered directly across the way from the amphitheatre with routes ranging in difficulty from 6a to 7b. Make sure to consult with the shop for tide levels as this is a high-tide-only-zone (check yourself before you wreck yourself!). Barring an ongoing typhoon (such as today’s), guided climbing trips are almost always possible.

Just a few updates:

Tiger & Moody Beach can be accessed by boat in Lan Ha Bay. Tiger Beach is a private beach in Lan Ha Bay and you will need access passes to climb here. Check with Asia Outdoors for information.

DWS will depend on the conditions of the tides. When the tides are too low, starting on a route will be extremely difficult and increasing the dangers of falling onto the boat and hitting rocks. Email info@asiaoutdoors.com.vn for information about days with optimal tide conditions. Deep water soloing can be enjoyed from May to October when tides and weather are ideal.

There about 30 – 40 old routes in the bay that were equipped many years ago that do not meet the current safety standards. It is highly advised that you do not climb at these areas until they are re-bolted. Some of these areas with old bolts include: Taxi Girl, Laughing Dog Wall, Polish Pillar (One Pillar Pagoda), Jules Verne’s World, and Cerro Torre. Jan 12, 2013
