Despite the name, the routes are on clean, rough rock in an atmospheric setting giving a feeling of foreboding due to its magnitude and limited sunshine. The climbing can prove intimidating, frequently on flat or sloping holds in exposed positions and protection is often well spaced; the routes feel hard for their grade. It requires several days of dry weather to come onto condition.
