Description
Shortfin Squid is an interesting route if you're already planning to do Bobtail Squid. It's probably a bit harder and more committing. The first bolt is high (sorry, short people) and the second bolt is easy to get to but a ledge fall if you blow it. Sorry, I know it's a bit off-brand for me. If you don't want to lead it, it's easy to get to the anchor if you've already climbed Bobtail Squid. After climbing the first pitch, head out left and look for a single bolt to protect a 5.3 move up to a giant ledge. Once on the ledge, be careful not to snag rocks and head left to the base of the Motorboating Bypass Pitch. There is a single bolt belay at the base of the Bypass. This route was put up as an alternate start to Motorboating. If you add in the Motorboating Bypass Pitch, you've got at least a three pitch route. You can continue up Motorboating and make it longer if you like. A nice, easy romp if you're learning to multi-pitch. A good option if you planned to do Motorboating but there is a party of four Gumbys above you and you won't be able to harness up until 3pm.
Location
Hike up toward Octopus's Garden but go right instead of left. There's a slightly exposed move under a bulge as you "walk the plank". Easy but may feel exposed for newbies. The first route you encounter is Short Fin Squid and the second is Bobtail Squid. You may not notice the bolt for Shortfin Squid but Bobtail is easy to spot.
