Why I start dumb threads on MP
|
There is a large contingent of mountain project that mostly uses this site as a reinforcement mechanism for their own ego. When many users have an opportunity to feel superior they seize it. When you make a good point grounded in objective facts people ignore it (I used to correct insurance misinformation frequently and get no response) or pretend it wasn't said because it isn't an opportunity to feel superior. In order to illicit a response you have to make the dumbest points possible inorder to evoke that feeling of superiority many users are seeking and that is when they respond. JCM genuinely starts threads that could be interesting topics, yet for some reason more people respond to me. OLH is genuinely nice to people and people don't treat her with the same kindness. Stig wrote a fantastic trip report that got 3 likes (honestly the whole trip report subforum). This is also clear by the lack of people who are actually interested in having a conversation in the forum or over the phone. I generally don't love hanging out with egotistical people, but if I am, might as well have fun. It is a simple formula, first find an idea that is uncontroversial but make it crazy. Second make the worst points you can for it, so users have an easy argument to be had. Third, ego driven users won't really argue they will just flame. They construct since poor arguments since their main priority is to feel superior, I can just keep it going. Non egotistical users just won't respond, they are not looking for the validation to feel superior. The hiccup recently is that JT is actually responding to me. The other component is to realize climbing is just a hobby. The user base is so insecure that if you attack conventional components of climbing they get flustered because you are attacking their identity. Users care so much about what people think of them, that they assume everyone else does. If a rationale person doesn't care about something, they just won't respond. But my threads are also true: I do actually wear pants over my harness regularly because I don't want to cool off too much or get bit by bugs (looks hella dumb tho). My posts lose their effectiveness if you guys stop having such fragile egos. But it is super funny how insecure yall get. |

Maybe the real April Fools are the friends we made along the way. |

I'm honored to have earned a shoutout! |

I got through a couple sentences on the OP but then quickly remembered how much I hate the star system ratings on this site. I wish someone would start a thread about that. |

This thread is a great example, rather than bump a relevant topic people commented on this. If you all like rock climbing, maybe engage in more rock climbing conversations? This thread should have received 0 comments.... Aaron K wrote: Can you point me in the direction to improve?
Have you ever had a boss you tried to be nice to and rather than them being nice back they are a total POS. Might as well have fun if you are dealing with them! |

Unpopular opinion: Trevor is spot on about how people react to his threads. |
