Things that give you "the ick"

people who spew about how one should be allowed to answer a question on an on line forum when they themselves go off topic from time to time give me the ick almost as much as folks who turn into the grammar police when they have been out maneuvered in an argument on line . |

grug gwrote: Free speech is such a pian huh? Too bad you're being forced to come to the site, read, and respond to comments. Must be tough. |

synthetic fabrics that smell bad the moment you start sweating and smell even worse when they dry out, like that yellow bd sun hoodie. |

apogeewrote: Indeed. Laughter is way healthier than rage. A meme a day keeps the PT away ;) But seriously, it’s way more fun to read and laugh at someone’s memes than read the daily rage bait news. Ok, maybe while you’re constipated sitting in an outhouse, or crouching in your harness over a wag bag, raging about someone else’s gold toilet might be helpful, I’ll give you that: Nick Goldsmithwrote: |

George Mwrote: I agree. In climates that favor the use of a sun hoodie, you might as well wear wool. Although synthetics are much cheaper and more durable, wool could keep you cool more effectively due to its moisture wicking properties. On the other hand, some high tech synthetic coatings reflect sunlight better, offering better protection and less warming from the sun. However, here in PA it's a tropical climate with wet bulb temperature higher than Phoenix. I've found I have to wear synthetic fabrics or I'll get heat stroke, and sun hoodies are out of the question because I need maximum ventilation. Meanwhile in Phoenix, the more I cover up the cooler I am. It's kinda a paradox Here's a link to a pdf download of the scientific paper Why do Bedouins wear black robes in hot deserts : https://www.sci-hub.ee/10.1038/283373a0 Tl;dr on the article, black is not better or worse for robes because they are so billowy, but I would stick with light colors because we don't climb in robes. In dry climates you will indeed stay cooler if you cover up than if you expose bare skin. |

apogeewrote: Climbers shouting instructions into the wind all around me at Taquitz on a weekend gives me the "ick" People who won't adapt to the "better way"... Used correctly, Rocky Talkies are slick! |

Jay Crewwrote: Rocky Talkies are fine but really not necessary. My partner is welcome to carry one if he or she wants. |

Jay Crewwrote: For full effect, be sure to wear your headset. It will coordinate nicely with your GoPro. |

gym kids that flash the boulder you've been projecting |

Jay Crewwrote: I'm thinking these instead at 1/10th the price and less weight too with dual ptt buttons. Or just make a plan to use cell phones if you have service. I really don't think I'd enjoy having a rocky talkie clipped to my harness snagging all my gear. Unintended consequences of walkie talkies include excess communication - now my belayer wants to know everything I'm doing up there and i have to take time to answer while I'm gripped, oy vey. But yeah, they're a good idea for sure. |

Eric Mosswrote: rocky talkies don't talk, belayers do. beta is to clip it to the side of your leg loop, and the bungee next to the bottom hard point. you only need it at the anchor anyway, so keep it out of the way. |

apogeewrote: Ah, I was once like you, dragging my knuckles on the ground and yelling about the cliff. But then I evolved |
|

Jay Crewwrote: One man’s “evolve” is another man’s “devolve.” Also communication that doesn’t purely consist of rope tugs in morse code is aid. |

Hating on Rocky Talkies is BIG BOOMER ENERGY. "Back in my day we SCREECHED into the wind like REAL MEN" haha okay boomer have fun with that |
|

grug gwrote: Ah the new generation. Incapable of understanding that "simple" can bring joy in and of itself. I gotta add though that even with all the shit kids these days insist on having on their harnesses (10 pounds of radios, "PASs," always a GriGri, prussics, the kitchen sink, God when does it end)? Even though they can't seem to climb with a gear sling and how can one miss the way they clip the 'biners to their harness backward? All that and most of them still climb harder grades than I do. What's more, blind as they may be, they seem to have plenty of fun. Almost as much as we did at that age. |

I don't own walkie talkies and have only used them a few times climbing, but I've you've used them on a busy weekend in the Black Canyon where you are in earshot of another party yelling "Aaron off belay!" you have to admit they're pretty nice. |

There must be a simpler, more elegant, less clunky way to accomplish the need for communicating at the crags than those stoooopid pieces of ‘technology’. Put down the game controller and figure it out, Gen Z. |
