trump won't start any wars unless he thinks it will help his ratings. All bets are off in that dept. What he absolutely will do is hand the keys to the city to Putin.  Putin plays trump like a cheap fiddle at the fair.

As someone who travels frequently with a good looking white European woman with a green card during trumps term it was absolutly terrifying. I cant Imagin what it would have been like for a person of color. The fear was real and justified. Isa is a citizen now thankfully but that process was held up for the entire 4 years of the trump administration. went though finally 4 months after he left office.

This election is not about trumps character, Its about your character.  Supporting a rapist, serial liar and felon who thrives on mocking people that he doesn't like throwing around 3rd grade insults every single day says a whole lot about your character.

I think Nick's  first and third paragraphs are exactly the case (I took out the middle para in quoting him to emphasize those two).

Especially : "What he absolutely will do is hand the keys to the city to Putin."

Most Americans are too shallow get what effect this will have on, first the world, and then on them.

And: "This election is not about trumps character, Its about your character."

Completely self explanatory.

What is your suggestion? Just stop deportation?

“The Alien and Sedition Acts. These laws raised the residency requirements for citizenship from 5 to 14 years, authorized the president to deport "aliens," and permitted their arrest, imprisonment, and deportation during wartime. The Sedition Act made it a crime for American citizens to "print, utter, or publish...any false, scandalous, and malicious writing" about the government.

The laws were directed against Democratic-Republicans, the party typically favored by new citizens. The only journalists prosecuted under the Sedition Act were editors of Democratic-Republican newspapers.

Sedition Act trials, along with the Senate's use of its contempt powers to suppress dissent, set off a firestorm of criticism against the Federalists and contributed to their defeat in the election of 1800, after which the acts were repealed or allowed to expire. The controversies surrounding them, however, provided for some of the first tests of the limits of freedom of speech and press.”

They were repealed and allowed to expire. Not sure they’d pass the constitutionality test at this point?
They’d declare war on Mexico, all the Central American countries and any other seditious countries.

Meh, just a few details left up to “them”.

NR is a reasonable publication. I agree with what’s written, and admit that was the most “radical” thing I’ve ever read there.

During Trump's era, NR editors have certainly supported directions that were in the interest of true conservatism, but for the most part, they have been critical of Trump as a leader and a personality- Cooke's piece is very consistent with that, and not at all 'radical' to my eye.

Trump's primary support is based on populism, which is about identity politics more than it is actual ideology or leadership. Apparently much of the electorate doesn't understand this, though.

Oh let's just face it, most people, non-politicians and politicians included, are fuck heads. Most people are hollow shells play acting scenes as if they're in a movie so they fit in, and most are driven by the desire to get shiny, tasty things. People don't even actually feel anymore; they act out a scene for every scenario, complete with social media posts, orchestrated events and remembered lines. I'm enjoying watching your political...

Anyway...

Little tiny bit of bouldering at Urban Climb; three fails and a send.  If you aren't failing you aren't trying...

I'll go back tomorrow to get the failed one.

Time to earn my keep on this climbing thread, mostly so I can reply to "simple as that" trump lovers.  My real name is Kevin L. and I live east of Fresno in the foothills.  I am 66yo and first tied into a goldline with a bowlin on a coil at Rattle snake rock near Woodside in 1972.  Been climbing off and on since then.  I Retired at 60 and shattered my ankle soon thereafter and now use that as an excuse whenever needed.  I joined the gym last year and committed to going climbing more after meeting John Sherman and having him say "you guys look like you know how to climb you just need to get strong again".  The first picture is my son doing a boulder at the local area that I hope to climb again someday (with more and better pads).  In the 2nd picture I'm the slimmer guy who's not John Sherman . Thanks to all who post here as it has helped me stay psyched.

I’m recovering this morning from a hard day climbing.  In my mind it shouldn’t have been hard, so what’s going on?  Trying to keep a positive, helpful spin on things and look for solutions to having no energy in the tank.  It could have to do with wildly swinging blood sugar, which is not the norm, and there’s not much I can do about those episodes.  My feet hurt?  I’m out of excuses.

Bob has suggested I hike Ryan Mountain, frequently. The one place in this park I hate/dread.  So, ok. I’ll do it.

King Dome is a beautiful wall.  I’ve teased and dreamed about climbing Mission Impossible for years.  That will never happen because of a 10 foot vault at the start, but it’s right there… just a few feet away from my routes.  Arturo’s Special is a great route, with so many different moves, tiny ledges, traverses, shuffles and smears. It has never felt like 5.8 to me.

Tony’s home, and he, well, men in general, baffle me.  This was a touch and go situation where they sent him home with half his blood and some kind of rupture repair in his abdomen.  He’s bruised head to toe and looks like he’s been in a bar fight.  And the first thing he wanted to do when he got home was the dishes.  And then to discuss this hip surgery.  I’m thinking rest, recover, rebuild.  He gets through life with muscle and balls to the wall.  He’ll go until he drops.  I’m trying to learn how to accept and support ‘other’… someone so completely different. It’s a life lesson. But I have to say it makes my heart flutter a little.

Rich, those photos are hilarious, thanks for sharing.

Carl, nice bouldering.  So how was the trip?

Lori, sorry for the scare.  Hope he gets back on his feet soon.

Mark, sorry for your loss.  That's tough.

Okay, so supplements - I've never taken any, but I guess if I were to do so, it would be something to help with connective tissue.  I'm starting to consider maybe investing in one thing.  A show of hands, who thinks this is legitimately helpful (or not), and what is the best single supplement for it?  Glucosamine and chondroitin?  Collagen?  Other?

Thanks,

GO

Here's one vote for supplements being not helpful. Unnecessary and a waste of money. I believe there are few doctors who would endorse supplements.

But people will say they feel better and you can't argue with that!

There's significant science backing up some supplements: Protein, Creatine, Caffeine.

Why didn't Trump hand him the keys during his first term?

Trump was in the process of dismantling NATO effectively giving Russia the keys to every eastern block country between Kaliningrad and  Moldova to the Russian mainland.

So, yes, he did. That’s why Biden ended up having to bolster NATO to protect all these sovereign nations.

Oversimplification is why half of Americans are still voting for Trump.

The world isn’t simple.

For instance, the main thing I’m not happy about is Trump banning chip technology to China. What that does is make chips more expensive for everyone. If you design a product, it’ll cost much more than if China is able to manufacture it from scratch. It’s effectively inflation.

Ironically, China is building their own lithography machines which is extremely worrisome to Nederlands. That would tank a major source of revenue for them when China floods the market with less expensive equipment.

Another simple example, is the “competitive” stance against China thing was started by Trump and perpetuated by Biden.

If China hadn’t run a test with their DF-41 missile, USA may have attempted to nuke China. US intelligence even though it was only a modified DF-31.

Nuclear diplomacy requires parity, it’s really stupid crazy how a few intelligence analysts can make such horrific estimates to determine if USA could win a war with China, in this case, and actually recommend nuking them to win. They think only 25 nukes are active, and that only 10% can get through based upon the guess it’s a modified DF-31 rather than a Mach 25 DF-41. Oops… USA would only lose Dallas, Houston, NYC, DC, SF and likely many others when anti-missile systems fail to stop any of the missiles.

What I’m saying is the world isn’t simple, one bad decision can tank an ally country’s GDP or start a nuclear war cause you think you can win.

Tax breaks would be the only reason to vote for the moron. BTW, he was very intelligent prior to contracting COVID, but he had hypoxia for two weeks at 85% or less. He’s lost most of his original intelligence.

Having someone who can easily win a debate and remember very minute details as Harris can, versus a racially motivated moron capable of destroying our civilisation on a whim isn’t really much of a choice.

So, yes, China and Russia would win, Trump would literally give them the keys to win.

He did hand Putin the keys. So much so that many senior generals thought that there was no other explanation than Putin has something on Trump. Drastically weakened NATO and pretty much gave them the green light to invade Ukraine.

Kevin…. Welcome. Looks like you are up by Shaver Lake. Is that a recent photo of John?
He looks as beat up as I feel.

Lori—- don’t worry too much about being waisted after climbing something, it’s natural.

Being 70+ what do you realistically expect? Lots of “us” are not around anymore. Think about that for a second. When I’m lacing my super tight Mythos on, something I think about is all my past partners who are now passed. So I dedicate a climb for them then try my best to send it. Sometimes it actually works out.

Off to Hondo Wash for Halloween bash. I think I can maybe send a few problems- the ones that have sand landings and aren’t on the “V” scale.

Carl- Looks like you had a fine vacation in a fabulous place. Looking forward to summer time? Motorcycle trips?

Edit to add… Tony sounds like he is doing just fine! Lori I don’t think you understand men much.
We would rather hurt then be nursed, we would rather do something, anything, than sit around and watch others carry the load. And being all bruised up is a badge of honor, a show that “I can take it, don’t worry about me”

Very nice, Guy. Something I'll try to keep in mind.

I'm trying to make an extra effort to make the most of good Fall weather this year. Last week in Las Vegas was great! Hope to get back up to Bishop soon.

Glucosamine: good quality non-industry sponsored trials clearly show this does not work for joint pain.

Collagen: current research is poor quality / industry sponsored / rarely compared with protein control. My guess is we won’t be eating it in 10 years time. Will elaborate when I have more time.

I am not a medical doctor. I have a PhD in musculoskeletal pain rehabilitation.

My go-to for good information on supplements and herbs is ConsumerLabs.com.  It requires a paid subscription, and contains a wealth of information on almost every subject.

What I like about this company is that it is totally independent, tests most products itself and posts results.  It 'fails' many products for too little or too much stated ingredient, for heavy metals, toxins, etc.  I have relied upon Consumer Labs own testing of various brands of tuna, chocolate, coffee, rice milk, etc.

Consumer Labs also sifts through publications and studies to provide reliable info on products.  There is a ream of info on Collagen, which is not just a single ingredient but many forms and sources.  It turns out that garden-variety 'collagen' probably is not helpful for tendons and joints, but Type II Collagen from chicken cartilage is somewhat useful.  This is just a small excerpt from its report on Collagen.

"A study among 50 competitive athletes (average age 27) experiencing chronic ankle instability (CAI) due to ankle sprains found that taking 5 grams of hydrolyzed collagen (Tendoforte, Gelita AG) daily while completing home-based exercises (e.g., rope skipping, squatsand one-legged heel raises) three times weekly for 6 months improved subjective function of the ankle by 5.28 points on a 30-pointscale compared to no significant improvement in a placebo group. During a three-month follow-up period, those who had taken collagenreported fewer ankle sprains and injuries and improved ankle stability compared to the placebo group, although ankle stiffness was notimproved. This study was partially funded by Gelita AG (Dressler, J Sports Sci Med 2018).

A study in Australia among 20 people with chronic Achilles tendinopathy found that six of out 10 people who took 2.5 grams ofhydrolyzed collagen (Tendoforte, Gelita AG) dissolved in water twice daily 30 minutes before calf-strengthening exercises were able to return to their desired running sport after 3 months compared to only three out of 10 people in the placebo group. This study was funded by Gelita AG (Praet, Nutrients 2019)."

A manufacturer-conducted study among 100 adults (average age 49) with knee osteoarthritis showed that taking 2.5 grams of Type Jhydrolyzed bovine collagen (Wellnex Type J Collagen Peptides by Nitta Gelatin India Ltd) containing high levels of dipeptides daily for 3months reduced the severity of symptoms (pain, stiffness and functional limitation) by 26.30 points (on a scale of 0 to 96) and bloodlevels of CTX-II, a collagen degradation product linked with osteoarthritis progression, by 22.8% while a placebo resulted in reductions ofonly 5.67 points and 3.1%. The improvements were similar to that of 10 grams of "conventional" collagen peptide. Higher doses of theType J hydrolyzed collagen (5 grams or 10 grams daily) showed even greater benefits. The Type J hydrolyzed collagen contained >3,000ppm (3 mg/gram) of the dipeptides proline-hydroxyproline and hydroxyproline-glycine, while conventional collagens peptide productscontain less than 100 ppm of dipeptides (Devasia, Cartilage 2024).

Joint Pain and Function:

Collagen supplementation for at least three to six months may, at best, modestly reduce joint stiffness and/or pain according to several preliminary studies using various forms of collagen, including undenatured collagen, hydrolyzed collagen (collagen hydrolysate or collagenpeptides), and eggshell membrane hydrolysates. Some studies have shown no benefit.

Perhaps the most studied collagen product for joint pain is UC-II which, as noted above, is actually undenatured cartilage and containsonly a small amount of collagen that has not been hydrolyzed — about 10 mg of collagen in a 40 mg daily dose of UC-II. In arandomized, double-blind clinical study of 55 people who experienced joint discomfort after physical activity (but did not have arthritis,or joint pain at rest) daily supplementation with UC-II for 4 months was found to significantly improve average knee extension but did notappear to reduce pain compared to placebo (Lugo, J Int Soc Sports Nutr 2013).

Another clinical study compared daily supplementation with either UC-II (40 mg) or glucosamine and chondroitin (1,500 mgglucosamine HCl and 1,200 mg chondroitin sulfate) in people with knee osteoarthritis. After 3 months, UC-II significantly improved measures of pain, stiffness and physical function while the combination of glucosamine and chondroitin did not (Crowley, Int J Med Sci

Thanks Todd,In my heart I'm still a boulderer but outside the gym I'm  mostly a guy who does traverses, and backs off shit.  I joined the gym last halloween and go twice a week to boulder, I love it and have gone from occasional gym v3 to occasional v5 and gotten over some of my fear of getting hurt.  I'm going for a rematch with the problem I broke my ankle falling off next week.  I am hoping for at worst a broken heart but am maybe my gym training and commitment to being a non practicing alcoholic will allow my to complete it.
