Name that route by description PNW edition (#2)

Oh, bugaboos - I didn't see that one. Nice. Anyway, I was mostly just messing around. But I'll be out of pocket most of tomorrow so I'll forego posting a clue in the spirit of allowing others to keep it moving along. |

If nobody else is going I can lob in another 'crossword-type' clue: "Confused slow eastern North Carolina walker randomly paces route". You might notice more than one anagram 'trigger word' in there. The answer includes both the name of the route and the name of the crag. It's not in Idaho! [Sorry, Idaho.] |

Outer space is in there |

Drederek wrote: Yup! Can you finish it off? You might need to apply a bit of 'abbreviation' to get the right number of letters. Edit to Jon. Just worked out what you mean; was unaware of Private Idaho and thought you were referring to the question of that state's honorary inclusion in PNW! [Does Yukon qualify? It very nearly has a bit of Pacific coastline and is home to some significant climbing.] But no; it's not 'Senior Citizens in Space', which I believe is that route's correct name - ie no 'Outer'. Drederek has already got the route name bit of the answer [Outer Space; "randomly paces route " - ie an anagram of 'paces route'] and has effectively won; I just invited completion by the addition of the crag name - which shouldn't be too difficult for the location of a Beckey Washington classic. |

Ignatius Pi wrote: The various clues seem consistent with Private Idaho's Senior Citizens in Outer Space, yet the anagram is beyond me. |

Drederek wrote: I think I should call "time" on this one and pronounce you the winner. The route is Outer Space. I only added the crag name into the clue to pad it out a bit and possibly to provide an extra hint; I was sure that once one of them had been ascertained the other would swiftly follow - due to the well-known status and mutual association of both. [The route was a local classic when I visited in 1977 - and I doubt that that has changed!] I'll leave it open for anybody who is still working on the first part of the clue: "Confused slow eastern North Carolina walker"; remember that if there are any words in there that habitually appear in an abbreviated/contracted/initialed form - it's probably that shorter form that you need to make the clue work. Over to you. |

All righty then, a new clue: The crux of this route could be a heart stopping moment while making the first clip |
|
Every route at smith rock? |
|
Ok a clue for location, a sound made after getting the clip |
|
And for Ignatius, something someone who loves scree running might say |
|
Drederek wrote: Hah, yes; very good. 'Know talus'. Your win is confirmed! |

Ignatius Pi wrote: I'm not at all experienced with these British-style rebus crossword clues. I immediately saw "paces route" was "outer space", but couldn't make the rest of the clue work: "Outer Space" is at Snow Creek Wall, is that supposed to rhyme with "slow eastern"? North Carolina abbreviates to NC, where does that fit in? "Senior Citizens in Space" doesn't work because Outer isn't in there "Frogs in Outer Space", your clue doesn't suggest anything to do with that Space Goat? Space Cowboys? Plan 9 From Outer Space? Cat From Outer Space? why does WA have so many Space routes? |

George M wrote: Hi George. Yes; Snow Creek Wall is the crag we're looking for, and there's no rhyming involved this time! Here's the original clue: "Confused slow eastern North Carolina walker randomly paces route". I mentioned "more than one anagram 'trigger word' in there"; there are actually two. The second, as you clearly spotted, is 'randomly' which applies to 'paces route'. The first is 'confused' which applies to 'slow eastern North Carolina walker'. Before working out the anagram we need to make any routine abbreviations. North Carolina, as you say, gives us NC - US states being a rich source for UK crossword compilers! Directions also offer several useful abbreviations; L for left, R for right, N for north[ern], S for south[ern] .... you can probably see where I'm going with this. So, abbreviations made, we end up needing an anagram for 'slow e N C walker': Snow Creek Wall. Drederek's clue to me, which confirmed that he'd got the crag name, is 'something someone who loves scree running might say'. He took Snow Creek Wall, ditched the 'Wall' bit, then made an anagram of what was left: 'know scree' - which is clearly good advice for anybody who likes to run on it. |

Thanks Iggy! |

Thanks for the explaining, but I’m going to say that was Chance, the clue directed to our European friend is more of a rephrasing then a weak anagram of the route name I’m looking for! |

Drederek wrote: The scree thing was nothing to do with my question, then, but rather an alternative clue for yours? Brilliant! You sent me off on a wild goose chase while, without realising it, yourself coming up with a convincing clue for the wrong question? And it was such a good fit. Genius! I feel like a right idiot. Back to the drawing board.... |

Reminds me of when someone shouted some beta at me at Index, something about a hidden foothold, a sidepull knob and a pistol squat, the beta worked perfectly, and then they realized I was on a different route than they thought… |

Stepping Stones Have not climbed but appears a bit runout to the first bolt. Little Si for the sound. The name for your clue to the bloke from across the pond. |

Garrett Genereux wrote: Hah! That seems like a pretty good fit. Don't think I would have ever got it, unless 'stepping stones' had randomly sprung to mind; I was definitely running out of ideas, with 'rock hopper' probably being the closest I got to the name. Searched 'sigh' for the location but never thought of abbreviating it and putting 'little' at the front. Got quite excited at one point when pursuing the idea that 'running' might be an anagram clue and that 'someone who loves scree' could be 'scree lover' - which led to 'cree solver'. It had been the observation that 'scree' and 'creek' shared the same four letters which sent me off on my earlier red herring thinking that Drederek's subsequent clue was referring back to Outer Space - so I wondered whether 'cree solver' might be me. [This conveniently overlooked the fact that the subsequent clue preceded and prompted the red herring so couldn't have been referring to it!] A crossword clue along the lines of 'what X might say' generally yields 'I'm X' - so I applied it to myself and got 'I'm Pi', or 'impi'. That led nowhere so I tried searching 'Zulu' and, at some point landed on https://www.mountainproject.com/route/117699204/zulu-kiss ; I briefly pondered the fact that 'rope', an anagram for 'Repo', might be what one calls for immediately after placing a draw - but completely failed to spot the significance of 'Little Si' and 'British Aisles'. Close, but no cigar! Well; geographically close, perhaps - but nowhere near actually solving it. Can't quite work out Drederek's "a rephrasing then a weak anagram of the route name" as applied to "something someone who loves scree running might say". 'Rephrasing' is clear enough but the only anagram that I could find anywhere in the clues that gets close to the route name is 'heart stopping'; this yields 'stepping ratho' - Ratho being an ex-quarry in Scotland which obviously contains and consists of a lot of stones and rock, and is now incidentally the location of https://www.edinburghleisure.co.uk/venues/edinburgh-international-climbing-arena - but that seems unlikely to be what was intended! After all that I hope it's the correct answer! |
