It'd be fun while it lasted, though! Especially through a packed mall parking lot on Black Friday....

Like I said the first thing you should look at is the source of the information. coloradoinjurylaw.com/blog is probably an ambulance chasing lawyer. And this blog gives NO reference to that that figure or many of the other claims made on that page.

Embark that does genetic tests on dogs by comparing it to the DNA of known breeds has 14.8% of US dogs at least part pit bull.

If other dogs kill more per capita than pit bulls what's the reason only pit bulls should be banned?

And pitbullinfo sounds like it would be totally unbiased

So, at the beginning of this thread I posted about being attacked by three pit bulls at a climbing area, and included post attack photos. Here are the facts. The attack happened when I and our leashed dog were walking through a campground.  The dogs went after my dog, and when I tried to protect her they turned on me, all three of them. The thing is, that other than one bite to my hand, all of the bites were to my face and head. At the ER, the doc removed a canine from the crown of my scalp.

Later, from the Sheriff, I learned that all three dogs were adopted from various shelters that very same week by a couple of kids in their early twenties. I am sure that the shelters would not allow adoption of dogs that showed aggression towards people. I am also certain that during the one week that these kids had these dogs they did not condition them to be aggressive. However, pit bulls were bred to fight other dogs, and put three of them together, and well bad shit happens.

Once dogs pack up, they are in hunting mode, ready to take down prey for their tribe. Not so long ago, in rural areas, loose dogs running in packs would simply be shot. And we all understood that, and it was supported. If you knew the owner well enough, they might get a phone call...but it was the owner who's dog got loose, who's dog misbehaved, and the community standard was shoot the dog if it was on your property. Dog owners knew this, and did the same.

I love love love dogs. In a situation as in the OP, kicking the shit out of that dog is appropriate

As I said large dogs cause more damage. I don't see the details of that study, how did Rottweilers, German Shepherds and other large dogs compare?

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21475022/

This study says German Shepherds were responsible for the majority of bites before 2000, then Pit Bulls overtook them. Pit bulls were banned in Denver and then other dogs took over.

None of this says why pit bulls should be banned instead of all large dogs.

100%.

One of my neighbors was allowing his dogs (two German Shorthaired Pointers) to run unleashed and they came and killed my chickens (didn't eat them just slaughtered them all) and threatened another neighbor who was out at night. The other neighbor told the first one if I see your dogs on my property again I'll shoot them (well within his rights) and I never say those dogs again.

A friend was running with his dog off leash and came across two dogs off leash far ahead of their owners. An Australian Cattle Dog and I can't remember the other one but similar medium sized dog and they attacked and killed my friends dog as he tried to fight them off.

Just read this thread there's plenty of sources that aren't "omgpitbullssocute.geocities.com"

Always curious about how the statistics are developed.

For example, just for wild theorizing, it is true that German Shepherds are specifically chosen for the majority of police, military, or guard dogs for a reason.  The breed has certain optimal characteristics for the role.  Just as pit bulls were bred to optimize characteristics for a different role.

The theory I’m positing is that the data cited above may not be properly filtering for the difference between a “controlled bite” (intentional line of duty bite, so to speak) vs. an uncontrolled or accidental, unintentional bite.

For example, If you just looked at all “dog bites treated at the hospital” without controlling for the reasons, it can skew the interpretation/understanding.

Honestly, riding my bike used to ALWAYS set off one local dog, who went into chase and snap mode. If however, I stopped, got off my bike, and started walking?

The brainless fool would come over, all,  "omg, omg, I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to do that, it'll never happen again!!!" I can't remember just exactly what the goofball was, yellow lab, or some such. Actually a good boy. Except if you looked fun, lol! I mainly worried not about getting bitten, but just the 2 of us taking a dive on the street.

In the not fun category?

A group of us were way way out in the middle of nowhere, with a hike added on, for a rare moment when local ice climbing came in (my first time!!). These 2 ranch dogs (cattle dogs) showed up, barking and snarling. One, was looking sorta serious about it, the other was beta and doing wingman. We yelled, grabbed sticks, etc, and they eventually left. Came back once, just to see, and left again.

We were a party of 5, and a party of 2, all adults.

I am a professional writer and trained journalist (rip journalism). I have written professionally for many years for online resources in customer facing environments. You have probably read things I have written. You'd be shocked at how little effort goes into research or even attempting to verify facts. I believe almost nothing I read online unless it's a primary source.

Almost everything on the first page of search results is worthless, or at best a crap shoot, if they're trying to sell you a product or service.

Almost all statistics can be presented in a fashion to convince you of almost anything. Cognitive dissonance and confirmation bias are actively used against you. Everything you hear about the algorithm is pretty much true.

Almost everything you read online is junk crafted to fill out pages for popular search queries to sell you something or sell high view counts for ads. Then other pages literally copy the junk from the first successful page out there.

I wonder how much of what I just wrote is true.

Then nothing is worth discussing, since you've invalidated every source including the studies published on NIH'S website.

Lies, damned lies, and statistics I guess. Too bad for all the maimed people though.

P.S. Anyone can claim to be anyone online. I am a former POTUS, for example

I was at a park this weekend and a woman had two chihuahuas on leashes, she walked past a pit bull (also on a leash) and one of the chihuahuas was losing it yanking on the leash barking and snarling trying to attack the pit bull which was just inches out of reach. The pit bull just looked at it like, dude what's your problem? All I could think was, what is that chihuahua thinking? But that's dog temperaments right there.

The drive to the park. 1,000 times more likely to die driving than by a dog. However, a dog is more likely to bite you.

and you’re a million times more likely to die from an IED…whats your point?

You drive through improvised explosive devices to get to the crag?  Hard core…

However, I do agree that if your dog drives you to the crag, you may die.

Are you missing the point and saying something stupid as a joke? Or are you missing the point and saying something stupid because you are missing the point?
