Does Petzl officially endorse using a GriGri to belay a second?

For all you using a grigri in 'guide' mode (i.e. off the anchor), how do you prevent the rope from feeding out under it's own weight? As much as I love the grigri for belaying a leader, when belaying a follower I need to be able to take my hands off to organize stuff to get ready for the next pitch. The feeding out rope that the grigri does when belayed directly from the anchor prevents that.

How skinny is your rope and what GG are you using? I don't experience this with my GG2 on any ropes, including my Edelrid 8.9 Swift Protect.

But if you're going hands free anyway why not just throw in an overhand like you're supposed to on the brake strand near the GG?

You don't go hands free.

You have your follower reach the anchor and tie them off or they tether in... THEN you eat, drink, and be merry.

Does your follower know you regularly go hands free while belaying without backing up?

I go hands free with an ATC all the time….

I just put a knot in the belay side of the rope….simple

If they didn’t, would they have made a biner specifically for it?

Anyway, vergo>gg especially for guide mode belaying. I await my crucifixion

The Freino is also useful for rappels and for use with other devices.

Petzl has at least two "Tech Tips" related to usage of GriGri in the context of multi-pitch climbing, and belaying 2nd

"Belaying multi-pitch routes on single rope with a GRIGRI"

"Belaying a second directly off a fixed anchor at the belay station"

Here is link to tech tips related to GriGri - https://www.petzl.com/US/en/Sport/Belay-Devices-And-Descenders/technical-content-product/GRIGRI

PS - the only way to shut down trolls is to keep reposting links to official site

Like I said “with caveats”. Most other guide mode devices don’t have this problem.

Yes they do - Petzl has "caveats" covered for Reverso, and that covers "most other guide devices".

But, yeah, keep on trolling

Very easy to override a regular belay device in a similar way, it just requires the device to rest on a flake or wedge inside a crack.

Meh, the Gri has “handling issues” all around that the fanboys refuse to acknowledge.

Hopefully this thread reaches the noobs so they will be extra careful with their Gris or maybe, just maybe, buy a “real” belay device.

Godspeed

The grigri+ in TR mode basically doesn't backfeed. I still wouldn't go totally hands free but it makes belaying while eating much easier than with a standard grigri. Worth the weight when I expect to do most of the leading.

You can always tell when somebody didn’t quite learn how to belay fluently with a grigri, lol!

What’s it like to have someone resurrect a thread you made from 9 years ago?

Hmm.
