Honnold takes Magnus Mitdbo soloing in Vegas, YouTube demonetizes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cyya23MPoAI&ab_channel=MagnusMidtb%C3%B8 Kind of hard to watch since Magnus is nervous. If it were totally casual for him, it would have been a very different video. YouTube demonetized it, perhaps because Magnus was visibly scared? Does anyone know the alg they use? Or is it a manual thing? |

What really makes me angry about YouTube demonetizing videos is that YouTube still makes money off of the videos. We still have to see the shitty ads, and now we know the creator gets none of the profit. It's wage theft against content creators. edit: "God has you on top rope." |

Red bell peppers are delicious (4:45). Cool footage, but the video content and tone seemed kind of reachy. Maybe the next Kyle Walker will enjoy it more than me. Also, 30+ minutes for a Youtube video? Do Norwegians just have better attention spans than Americans from growing up listening to Edvard Grieg? |

Honnohold wearing the old Air Tommy, Sportiva in shambles confirmed |

F r i t zwrote: Most viewers are American, not Norwegians. It's not even close (Mitdbo reviewed the viewership-by-country stats in one of his videos). But yeah, I also thought it was a bit long. |

Entertaining video but definitely a bit freaky. I can understand why YouTube deomonitized since it's two people actually on the edge of death. Also unsettling to hear Honnold describe the climb both as "easy scrambling" but also as "hard/engaging climbing". Those guys are both wild |

Nick Herdegwrote: YouTube movies offers "Free Solo" for viewing at $9.95 and Free Rider is **much** harder than this Vegas 5.9. There are many other vids on YouTube featuring Honnold (and others) doing ropeless ascents. So why is this one being singled out? I don't get the policy, honestly. |
There's an easy way to avoid the YouTube commercials: Install as an extension to Firefox, Edge, or Chrome. A lot of these policies tend to not make sense. For instance, Instagram has no problem with bots/people reposting stuff and not giving the creators any credit. But if you try to add any music to your video, you're out! |

Gripped. I would be too. |

Cory Nwrote: Yeah, the exposure is pretty significant on that route, especially just after the money pitch. Onsight soloing would pretty impressive for someone who doesn't do that kind of thing regularly. |
F r i t zwrote: All of Magnus' videos that I've clicked on have been similar lengths, all of them made me get bored and turn it off after a few minutes. |
I'll note the autogenerated caption of "sport clowning" just a couple minutes in. Apropos, no? ;) |

That was terrifying to watch. Magnus looked so nervous. One slip and... done. |

I liked it. Another example of the uniqueness of Honnold’s psyche when compared with other very good climbers. |
I was probably naive about what truly motivates top soloist, but this video was a disappointment and left a bad taste in my mouth. Textbook example of extrinsic motivation, i.e., peer pressure, rather than the idealized or romanticized version of soloing for yourself. |

Fan Zhangwrote: i didnt think it was peer pressure, it was more of “we’re past the point of no return and we have to make it to the top to hike out” alex even said in the video that if they had gotten to the base and magnus was not into it/too nervous to start they wouldve hiked up to the peak and talked about it instead. i think once they got to the point of not being able to down climb anymore alex had to “pressure” him to some level to get magnus to not be totally glued to the rock in fear and be unable to move. i thought it was more of just keeping magnus from completely being in his own head, but idk. just my opinion. |
An interesting side note is magnus has soloed 8a before. |

John RBwrote: It's bad form for a soloist to take a reluctant partner up with them. Soloing is meant to be solo. |

It was uncomfortable to watch I like magnus’ videos, he seems like a good dude And I climb granite so obviously a honnlove fan here as well
Agree that once they were committed, Alex did what he had to, and handled it well, but jeezy creezy

i often get bored with his videos but i found that one engaging on many levels. honnold’s casual camerawork was next level! |
