Is there a word for that feeling when…

Is there a word for that feeling when, after you do something completely physically exhausting, you find the simple pleasures such as cold water or sitting on something soft so incredibly fantastic? Was discussing this with my climbing partner the other day and we couldn’t think of the word.

Honest Joy?

It’s right there with Honest Hunger and Honest Sleep for me after pushing hard.

Best so far… It’s that specific feeling of loving and appreciating the simple things in the most honest way- not so much the tired and exhausted part. But the general terms of “joy” and “bliss” don’t really cover this specific feeling because they are used too much to describe other things.

I know the feeling ❤

I found myself running back to the car the other day after a day of trad climbing while carrying a full pack and the feeling was honest joy. The joy wasn’t controllable and my body was so light.

On one climbing trip we coined the term "post fecal euphoria"  on a good day it lasts all morning.

Hey Alyssa , that is a great feeling and you describe it well. I can't think of a word for it but am reminded of one of my favorite passages from Moby Dick:

You can't feel joy without pain!

THIS. This is the feeling. Wish there was a single word for this. I guess there is, but society uses them too liberally. Thank you for sharing this

I don’t know about a specific word or phrase, but the thing I often find myself trying to explain during slide-shows is just how good the first big meal is once back from any sort of expedition – but especially if we have succeeded on one or two of our objectives.   I like to cook and do it well, but nothing I have ever put hours into preparing has ever been even half as satisfying or tasted nearly as good as that first meal once all the hazards and logistics of the descent and return in a country where I sort of speak the language, but not really, have been completed, our gear is stored, we have showered, we have had some beers and we are being served big plates of food.  The fanciest, most expensive meals in the world can’t compare with that, even when it is something simple.    Some of the best moments in my life.  I don’t post food pictures normally, but I include photos of these meals in my slide shows to try to capture the feeling.

A single word: divertissements == simple pleasures, little things

Does it need to be a single word, or will a sound suffice? If so, then the sound this guy makes I think sums it up perfectly.

You should watch Patrick Edlinger soloing in the Verdon. He talks about this in quite a bit of detail.

You know you had a good day when you drink some ice water and it rejuvenates you.

Camping makes me appreciate my bed and AC/heat when I get back, most people don’t realize how good we have it compared to third world countries.

You should ask a German - seems that language always has a make-up word for super-specific situations, where other languages do not . Japanese also comes up as a language that produces similarly specific words too.

On a similar note, I've experienced that feeling when treeplanting, years ago too. Slipping into a dry, warm sleeping bag after a full day of planting in the cold rain...

After a hard day backpacking, finally dropping the pack, setting up the tent... I seem to recall eating plain refried beans cooked on a msr stove and saying "oh my God, these are the best beans ever."

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
