What's "COVID-19"?

I'm just quoting this first reply on page 1 to see how well it would have by the time I get to the last page.

They're telling everyone to go away while they carry on life as usual. No one is wearing masks, in fact some people are making fun of them. People are still standing around talking to each other close like normal, passing around beers and hanging out. They freak out on an out-of-state plate though.

I get it, you live in a tourist town and you get sick of the tourists wanting to get in on all the amazing access you have. This seems like a great excuse to kick them all out and enjoy the place to yourself.

Well, it's not that simple, and we certainly won't be forgetting it any time soon. There will come a day when you're asking for those tourist dollars again, and some of us won't be as eager to give them to you. I'm already there, I've stopped doing carryout at the local spots thanks to the attitude I've been getting.

I guarantee though these same people will be happy to be taken to Grand Junction for lifesaving medical care, and still expect truckers make the hour-plus haul multiple times daily, as they've burning more gas then ever in their ATVs.

Yeah, I've lost count of how many folks here in Trumpalachia are basically saying "this whole virus is just liberal paranoia, but we still need to keep out the out-of-staters."

Yeah, Moab was still riding high on the Uranium boom at that point. Govt. stopped buying uranium in 1970, and Moab was a bust town for most of the 70s and early 80s.

I agree that Moab doesn't reeeeeeeally need climbers.  ATV'ers and Mtn Bikers, on the other hand...

Its a healthy mix of both left wing paranoia and right wing conspiracy theories, basically just modern day America. I'm always thinking back to 9/11 where it seemed we all united for a few days and wondering if this could ever happen again.

Moab- they would do just fine with just the 4x4 jeepster crowd

A lot of the political analyses I read before cv19 on our current hyper-partisan polarization speculated that the only thing that could break the gridlock was some sort of national emergency that would force people to put the good of all over their politics.

It's pretty clear that we'll need an emergency that is more dire than this.

Yeah, I could come up with a hundred thousand links from the internet to argue every point. I suggest to just pay attention to the CDC, pay attention to your doctors(ok maybe not the local Utah doctor who tells the ladies they better start having babies or their eggs will dry up and fall out- true story). Pay attention to the professionals, the ones trying to use their scientific and medical knowledge to help mankind, not the ex military guy who lives in farm country.

Personally Ive always been a Darwinist so seeing idiots doing deadly stuff has always been entertaining to me. Its not entertaining though when we would all like the country to open up again and return to normal yet we have so many non believers who keep spreading the virus therefore keeping this shutdown going. I'd really like to go have a beer at the local pub after a great day of climbing so please just listen to the professionals for a few more weeks while you research why you shouldn't (at home).

FWD to 1:27 to see the response

Thanks for making my point.

So nice to see the "but muh liberties!" crowd out and about during a pandemic! All y'all appear to have newly minted degrees in epidemiology and infectious disease!

You and people like you are begging for fascism. Military folk are not claiming a disease doesn't exist, it does, its just not as deadly as you claim, nor does it merit the response. Unlike you veterans have given of themselves to create the US we all enjoy. They understand a threat analysis and respond according to such, in this case they will not be standing aside from your sky is falling proclamations.

And since you mention it are you a scientist or a medical professional, do you work in epidemiology, can you cite the numerous publications you have in this area? No? Then why should anyone believe your claims?

1. I know you don’t speak for all “military folk”, so shut up with that.

2. The only wannabe fascist I see is unfortunately in charge and is cravenly grasping for all the power he can.

3. Do you think maybe the threat has been mitigated by some of the most restrictive measures seen in the history of humanity? But you want to kick sand on this, frankly, miraculous achievement? What a tough guy.

4. Why should anybody believe your threat assessment? I work in healthcare and can tell you this thing is ugly and scary close up. As far as expertise, those with actual credentials already weigh in daily but you seem to have decided it’s no big deal and need to be shown some magical links or something that I’m sure you’ll really pay heed to. Riiggggghhht.

A lot of those degrees from Google University will complement the Google degrees they received in constitutional law back in December!

I know. So heartwarming to see such a dedication to personal growth and epistemological hygiene.

Anyways, the gulf between real scholarship and Dan H's radical individualism is wide:

Well, despite all the tough talk, the tone shift has been interesting. We've gone from little old ladies scowling at me and taking pictures of my plates, people pulling up behind me and getting on their phone then a sheriff rolling on me a few mins later a couple weeks ago to people waving at me and folks saying hello to me in the grocery store. People are  asking local health officials when the tourists can come back, deep discounts from all the local restaurants for takeout with hand written "come back soon!" on pizza boxes, and locals talking about their loneliness and boredom on public radio. Funny how just a couple of weeks without revenue changes things. I mean just a few weeks ago the gas station folks scowled at me just for being there, now they all wanna chat me up.

I wonder if that has anything to do with loss of income? One can only imagine. I'm keeping my money close though, I tend to have long memory for these kinds of things.

Y'all keep doing you though.

Sean Brady, to quote all the raft guides I've ever worked around, "Tourons, love em, hate em, can't live without em. Be glad when the weekend is over! How big was your tip?"

So is Moab open for business or what? I’m a member of a UT MTB Facebook page and it seems like nothing changed for them, I see the videos of people shredding on a daily basis in Moab since the whole stay the fuck home thing started
