I call BS on this story...too unbelievable for me. Don't care if R&I took the bait.

So sad. It wasn't just a rack, it was a birthday gift!

It wasn't a birthday gift, it was white privilege. :)

What?! Did you just pick out some dude with a red shirt and beard to blast as a suspect? I'm sure the culprit only wears red shirts...Can't believe your post of some redshirt guy got 12 thumbs up.

This is a troll. I’ll give this guy a double rack if it isn’t.

Don’t know if you’re being facetious, but this guy (Mike) was a brief reddit climbing meme. Some folks frequent both forums.

I found this "News" flash from Rock & Ice extremely disappointing. The author simply read this thread and published an eye catching subject line. There is not a word of extra information more than what we could gather from this thread ourselves.  Why not just post a link to this thread and call it a day?!

The victim's number has been posted since day one. Did they even try to call him to seek more information? I'd be embarrassed with this low level of reporting quality if I were the magazine.

As for the case itself, I feel that if more details about the individual are provided, given that it might not be a huge pool of climbers who feel comfortable to free solo a 5.6 multi-pitch, and if the story is spread wider among the community, it is not impossible to lead to the culprit. I feel for the young climber.

This shouldn't be "call me" it should be "call the police officer in charge of this case who took the police report"...

How did you finish the climb and rap off the flatiron, after your gear was stolen?

i always thought it makes more sense for new trad climbers to have the bigger racks... safer that way.

Tbf the only 5.6 is the first slabby runout pitch, which is super classic and rite-of-passage-ey, but most soloists skip it I think on actual climbs of the First.

But anyway I wrote all this and agree with everything you said anyway so I'm just being pedantic.

This bothers me the most.  It sounds like they made no effort to contact Alex.  I mean, if this is real he should readily answer a PM to get in touch.

No they don't.
