If I sidetrack your sidetrack, does that put us back on track, or even worse off?

Good question! I'll research that. If two wrongs don't make a right, what do two sidetracks make?

Potato.

It's no more off topic of a statement than this is about to become.

Whatever happened to the thread about that eastern European GoPro-freesoloist in California?? Seems like he qualified as a dangerous noob situation wherever he went

He in the process of french frying his way down the California green circles trying not to hit people for his winter go pro edition and Powder Project's forum is sub par so we won't hear about it till next summer. Plus he's too hard core for this forum.

Had this happen to me also.  When I pointed out that its not good, he responded "Yes, its fine.  Its just a different style."

Never climbed with him again.

You and me both. Guy had a reverso too. Only time I've been more afraid seconding than leading.

I believe its nationalism vs racism, through right? Racist would be calling it a "Asian Field Trip".

Uh... are you the same race as someone from Mexico?

Let's simplify the original statement (which is straight aggression, nothing micro about it): You're proud of raising an asshole?

As to your first question, it depends on where that Mexican citizen's ancestry came from, as there are thousands of Mexicans whose heritage is nearly 100% Spanish, making them Caucasian.

LOL, claiming the moral high ground while calling a child an asshole.

Most nooby thing ever did:

- I started climbing outside with no mentor. Climbing gyms were in full swing, but I had never been to one. My inexperienced partner and I would hike to the top of a cliff and look around for bolts. One guy would lean out over the edge to clip some quick draws to the bolts and set up the top rope. The guy leaning over the edge was backed up by the other guy holding onto his harness. ("Don't worry! I'm using my arms!") We stuck with this method for a while, until I was dating a girl who knew some things. She watched us do this once, and then explained in horror, that the "lean out" method was not a method.

I started my dad off belaying me with an ATC. I was TRing. I had a GriGri. I felt that I should expand him to it. Little did I know what would happen. The next pitch, I go up. Steep overhang, i fail and swing away from the wall. The only way to recover was going up the rope to gain the wall again. I wanted to try something I'd read about. It involves getting a high foot onto the rope above your knot, pulling the upper body while pushing the foot into the rope to form it into a bight. Rock your weight over your foot, standing on the bight, then batmanning up the rope, while maintaining the stance. Then, jump off the bight, all the slack that you release will be pulled taught by the belayer. You just gained elevation, probably a foot shy of how tall you are. My dad didn't expect to fall backwards. He took both hands off the rope to catch his backwards fall. The GriGri saved my naive ass right after I implemented it. Oops.

+3. Yes, I've seen this not once, not twice, but actually THREE times! Once I followed a fellow who had been climbing for 40 years (so may not qualify for this thread), but had put me on this setup. The other two times, I saw it happening in different teams next to me. I never saw this before the Reverso was introduced, so there might be some correlation.

I used to volunteer at a local gym and we had our fair share of noob mistakes but the one that always stuck in my mind the most was a guy who came in the one night with his whole family and you just knew he'd be trouble.  he was the type of guy who went in and bought everything the local climbing shop had to offer which automatically made him a climbing expert. and let me tell you everything he bought came into the gym with him. 3 different belay devices, full rack of quickdraws, figure 8 device, and any number of other things I don't remember at this point. I was lucky enough to get him to teach him how to belay and right off the bat he didn't want to hear what I had to say, he already "knew" what to do. anyway I finish with teaching him and his family (the rest of his family seemed fairly receptive) and let them on their merry way with a watchful eye. now the gym is set up with anchors to the ground and standard ATC's attached with the ropes pre figure 8ed to just tie in. don't I walk around 5 minutes later to see him having taken the ATC off and using his own belay device (grigri if I remember correctly) with the rope improperly loaded and attached to a carabiner which was attached to a 2nd carabiner which was attached to the anchor and not his belay loop and his belay technique was awful. to top it off he put his poor kid on an overhung route to test out his new gear and had the kid on the wrong rope for the route he was climbing. oh and the figure 8 wasn't tied properly either. so I corrected him on everything and he acted like he was listening only to go back to what he was doing. I had to get the shift manager to basically tell him if he didn't go back to using our gear and use it properly that we would have to ask him to leave because he kept ignoring us. after that he begrudgingly starting doing things the right way. they finished out the night without incident and only a few more minor corrections but i'll be damned if he didn't go on to get someone or himself hurt or worse with the attitude he had.

I was at the gym one time, and saw some guy bouldering with his harness on, and that's not even the worst part.  This fucking punter was wearing a shirt, and didn't have a beanie on.  Do you even boulder brah?!?  Fucking noobs... so worthless...

Children are assholes, by definition. It is the parent's job to curb and modulate that behavior. The statement wasn't an indictment of the child as much as the parent.

Pretty sure I have considering I lived in Africa for 4 months and not everyone over there likes white people.
