Define an "Artist"

These days...

Director: Artist

Actor: Artist

Chef: Artist

Musician: Artist

Singer: Artist

Climber: Artist

Plumber: Artist

Painter: Artist

Why are words such as "artist", so loosely used???

As climbers, we are not artists, because we did not create the art that we climb on....

But "Art" is different to everyone. What's your definition???

To me, an artist is someone who adds their creative and unique touch to the activity they participate in. In my opinion they do not need to physically create something new, yet if they can engage in a sport/hobby in a way that is stylish and appealing to the eye of others, they are creating art.

So Dylan, Art is in the eye of the beholder? I do agree...

Tom'O, that is art.

Now is hanging a chair that looks like a tribal tattoo on a cliff, art?

I vote no...

Where is the distinction made in your eyes between artist and artisan? Furniture maker creates and builds something, artist? I think so. I think it is a way of looking at the world, yea maybe it is a loose use of the term, but who cares. Climbers can be artistic, there is creativity involved, does being artistic make you an artist? If a painter does not make his own canvas, is he an artist? Climbing is definitely an art, the climb, the line is the art, and one could argue the rock is as well.

Didn't you know art is dead? I suggest you get some in your life.

Define an artist. Okay, no problem. Artist:

art·ist
ˈärtist/
noun
noun: artist; plural noun: artists
a person who produces paintings or drawings as a profession or hobby.

a person who practices any of the various creative arts, such as a sculptor, novelist, poet, or filmmaker.

a performer, such as a singer, actor, or dancer.
informal

a habitual practitioner of a specified reprehensible activity.

Webster says an artist is:

a obsolete : one skilled or versed in learned arts

2
a : one who professes and practices an imaginative art

b : a person skilled in one of the fine arts
3
: a skilled performer; especially : artiste
4
: one who is adept at something

Guarantee you Ari that Pudge the douche bag is better with his skill saw and mallet than you could ever be with that guitar of yours. 4) One who is adept at something, in your wildest dreams, go half ass some more activities in your life and post the photos on MP, your 5.9 RRG climbing is not only incredibly impressive but totally extreme, maybe even artistic?

Today i took a shit in the woods. As always, i didn't use toilet paper. I used smooth river rocks. Somethings to add my own unique touch a use a quart crystal here and there. Maybe even a stick or two... Behold my art bitches
