TR Soloing on Pro Traxion?

I bought a Pro Traxion a while back, and am now interested in top-rope soloing.

I know that Mini Traxions are popular with the TR soloists, but I don't have one.

Is there any reason why I can't just use my Pro Traxion to TR solo?

Thanks!

it's heavier, that's about it. make sure you tie backups otherwise you could die.

I used one as my backup below a mini trax for several years. I would not use one for my main. You are really supposed to have a biner through that second hole on the Pro, and it would be very bulky if you did that (I never did when using for TR, but always do when using it to haul).

The cool thing compared to the mini is that you can get it off the rope without removing the main biner, so you don't risk dropping the whole contraption. You have to take the biner out of the main clip in on a mini or micro to open the body, just push the button rotate it on the Pro.

If you plan to do a lot of this, just get two micros, or if you're broke, pick up a couple minis..lots of folks (and stores) selling off the minis cheap since the micros arrived.

Do you guys all tie backup knots if you're TR soloing with two separate redundant devices, each on a separate strand? Cause I don't. Am I gonna die?

I drag a ropeman as a backup on a separate strand, with mini-trax moving above me on it's own strand.

I don't use separate strands, and I don't tie backups aside from hanging my pack at the very bottom...it wouldn't stop me most of the time, and the few cases it would I'd hit the ground hard with the stretch anyway. I feel fine with two devices on the same strand because I have no worries about the rope cutting, my concerns are about the device not engaging due to getting the cam wedged open or a shirt or something stuck in it, and having a backup alleviates that concern.

The only time I've almost hit the ground TR soloing was using a grigri. The fall started slowly and the grigri got pinned somehow and just didn't engage. The route was actually overhanging, so I never really figured out WTF happened. I was only about 25' off the deck and it finally locked after about 18', I could have touched the ground with the stretch (instead I had my legs sucked up like a cannonball, hoping it would catch before I cratered). That's the biggest reason I don't use a cinch or grigri, that and the traxions feed really well.

I thought the ropeman was capable of chopping your rope if you shock-loaded it.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
