Dumb things other climbers have said

I work at a university gym so i hear my fair share of dumb comments. I'm not one to make fun of new guys but this guy was a jerk from the get go so I don't feel as bad. To set the scene he was a 30 year old grad student with a pony tail and goatee.

After lowering him from his second route he turns around stone serious and asks

"so have u guys had to knife anyone out yet?"

me "what do u mean by knife?"

"you know, like when someone gets caught up in the rope and you have to cut them out to save them"

me "no no we have a pretty safe gym haven't had to knife anyone this year"

I managed to stay serious to not make him feel bad but the girl next to me was almost in tears laughing

The Earth is 6,000 years old.

You're probably right, Jody. In all likelihood, she's much dumber than her reputation suggests because her handlers have kept her dumbest ideas and statements out of the media. That's what they're paid to do.

I guess I should add something climbing-related:

A few years ago, myself and a friend went sport climbing in Boulder Canyon with someone we'd never climbed with before. My friend put up some 5.11 and lowered off. Our new friend TR'd the route and pulled on most of the 'draws on her way up, but made it to the top.

On the way out she asks me, "So that last one was a 5.11?"

"Yep."

"So now I can say that I've climbed a 5.11?"

I honestly don't remember my answer.

Who said the earth is 6000 years old? I never said that yet it appears you attributed that quote to me. :)

And the same goes for Obama's handlers...if it weren't for them we wouldn't even be talking about how dumb Palin is, she wouldn't be in the conversation with the stupidity exhibited by Obama.

There's a reason I didn't put the 6,000 y.o. comment in quotes. The comment was in response to your continued intolerance toward religious views other than your own. In this case it's Atheism; I've also seen you attack Islam several times.

I'm really not sure what you're trying to say here. The fact is people have been talking about how stupid and ignorant Palin is before Obama was elected president.

There's a big difference between stupidity/ignorance and disagreeing with others' opinions and/or courses of action. You disagree with Obama's courses on action on several issues, as do I. But to compare Obama's level of intelligence with Palin's is laughable.

PS This is a fun thread and I'm not interested in turning it into another political debate. So say your peace if you'd like, Jody, but don't expect a response from me in this thread.

Truher words never spoken.

What would be even funnier would be to ignore the landowner's words of wizdoom only to be plunked on the head by loose choss.

I would say that JML shot first, here. And, as usual, did so in a completely inappropriate context.

How do you figure? The title of the thread said "Dumb things other climbers have said". I posted quotes from other climbers which I considered to be dumb. The posters AFTER me made it political.

Almost everything else in the thread is something to the effect of "wow, people are unsafe" or "gosh, people spray a lot."

Then you come in with "atheism and evolution are stupid."

I know you know that doesn't belong. You posted it to stir up precisely this kind of political talk, and pretending otherwise to try and shift the blame is insulting. Would you mind keeping your blatant trolling in its own threads like you used to? It wasn't quite so irritating then.

One time I went climbing with a guy doing a degree in outdoor leadership. Despite the fact that I already checked everything, he refused to start belaying until I recited verbatim the climbing commands. I complied, and when we finished the exchange he kindly informed me:
"If you want to be really cool, you can say 'rocking' instead of 'climbing', so I can reply 'rock on!'".

Climbing in Carhartts is about 4x as lame as climbing in man-pris.

Climbing related...

While buying only one #2 camalot at the REI in Denver, I was asked "what are you going to do with just one?" by the wise, old sage operating the register.

"If you don't lock your locking D, you can take them off belay much quicker."

saw some dude kick a dog at the red last fall, he said that bringing a dog to a crag is the exact same as bringing a giraffe or a chimpanzee. weird thing was, the belayer/kicker was on the rope and draws of the dogs owner. I was kicked out of miguels that night when i heard the kicker talking shit about the guy and his dog. some fucking people

I was at one of those Red Rock Rendevous clinics 5 years ago-Conrad Anker was the host of this particular one. He was talking about setting up anchors. Someone in the group inquires to Conrad:

"ya ever have one of those things blow?"

He just calmly said "no" and continued with the discussion.

That was funny (I thought)!
