Anybody know him? I got an e-mail that was one of those perfect rip-off ones..."Help, I am stranded at a foreign airport, I was mugged, I have no money, help!" Anyway, I had never heard of this guy so I sent a nasty e-mail back to him about ripping people off. I then did a google search and saw a lot of climbing related stuff attributed to a guy by the same name. Does anybody know if the one registered here on MP is on vacation in a foreign country? If Ryan reads this, are you the one who sent the email? Just curious, I have never heard of the guy and his last post here was over a year ago. Just wondering if he is the same guy running the scam or if it is just a coincidence. If you are not the scam artist...sorry. :) someone might have stolen your name to perpetrate this scam. If it is really you, sorry, I don't know you...should I? Anybody else get that email?

Those kinds of scam emails are going around. They refer to a real person, and often one you know well, but they're perpetrated by a third party. There was a forum post on here once about that...

Please be aware of this scam. I have been on the receiving end of two such emails where people I knew well could not be sending them. The usual storyline seems to be 'I am in some sort of trouble somewhere far away.' Then the plea for money. This email is sent to the victim's entire contact list AND the victim's emails are re-directed to another inbox until the victim can regain control of their email browser account. Obviously, this can have serious impacts on a personal and professional level. Notify the victim offline and try to be understanding of the misadventures we can have on the www. gilroy

This same thing happened to another MP'er a few months ago. I highly doubt Ryan has anything to do with this.

Heh. I'm a friend and Facebook friend of Ryan's. He was indeed hacked. He posted a notice on FB that he'd been hacked, and that no one should believe any email we might get from him asking for help. Then I received this email from Ryan's address: "Terrible Ordeal!!! Need Urgent Help!!! Hello, I'm writing this with tears in my eyes, I came down here to Wales,United Kingdom for a short vacation unfortunately I was mugged at the park of the hotel where I lodged, all cash, credit card and cell were stolen off me but luckily I still have my passport with me. I have been to the embassy and the Police here but they're not helping issues at all and my flight leaves in less than some hrs from now but am having problems settling the hotel bills and the hotel manager won't let me leave until I settle the bills,I'm freaked out and confused at the moment I really need your help.. I'll be waiting for your response so you can get help to me right now. Thanks"
--It was all quite entertaining, except probably, for Ryan.

Ryan's entire Facebook profile is gone now, I assume that's where his Trojan Horse was implanted. I was the first to post on his profile that he'd been hacked; and now I have a Trojan Horse too. Anyone receives an e-mail from me today, just delete it asap. I heard there was a large FB outage yesterday, I'll bet this was related. Also, if anyone has some ideas for me on how I can de-bug my computer cheaply I'd be very thankful. I run AVG anti-virus.

Yep my wife's email was hacked a couple of years ago. She also has a FB account. I wonder if that's where these culprits find their vics. Makes me glad I don't have a FB account.

Just to counter the conjecture, I've never had a facebook account but an old email of mine was hacked in a very similar manner about a year ago. The emails are pretty transparent, you'd have to be a real fool to fall for this one...

That email was also used in other forums I am a part of. Apparently the owner of the email address gets hacked and the hackers spam all their contacts and forums with that very same message

Hey Mike, I posted a comment on Ryan's wall after you. I didn't think that was a very inter-active or risky action. How do you know you're now infected?

You cant get a trojan by going to a persons FB page or even opening an email from them. You need to click on an executable file and download it. So unless you clicked a link in his email or on his FB page you havent been infected

Not sure if this is what happened in the case of Ryan's accounts getting hacked (my account sent the entire address book a "personal" email about great deals on flatscreen TVs earlier this year): In the last few months on facebook, lots of people have been showing that they "like" certain websites or pictures that have intriguing titles like "You won't believe what her mom did when she saw this picture!" etc. When you click on the link, it actually has YOUR account "like" the link as well, and it spreads from there.

I work in IT security, a couple things. Everyone is wired differently, some people have an impulse to respond to pleas for help just like some have an impulse to gamble, that is why you see such ridiculous phishing emails. If they didn't work, you wouldn't see them, social engineering. Combofix is a great tool if you think your system has been hijacked, be careful though, you can lose data...... but it rarely happens with this tool. JML, please rename this thread. Someone just scanning the thread title might get the wrong idea. The rest of you...... stay off Facebook. I have an account because it seems like you "need" one nowadays but I rarely mess with it. Its for teenagers anyway.

A 70 yr. old client of mine in Peru last week almost sent money while responding to one of these scams from a friend's e-mail who'd been hacked. Same MO- stuck in London. Luckily I'd seen it before and alerted him before the money had been sent...but it was close as he would do anything to help a friend in this situation.

I haven't read the rest of the posts to this reply. But I know Ryan personally!! He is not the type of person to do this!!! And further more, Ryan is not in a foreign country!!! He has been working his ass off providing for his family!!!! I just text him yesterday, letting him know I've got the materials for a beer I'm brewing him. I also text him today, about this post. But Ryan is a stand up guy who WOULD NOT send scam emails to people!!! But you would have to know him to know that!! Juan

Okay, read all the posts. About facebook: "'because it seems like you "need" one nowadays'" You don't "need" anything like those networking blackholes. And this is a perfect example of why one should stay away from them, there is WAY WAY too much information about us all in that quagmire called the interweb!

Of course this site has 2 sections- the route info (AKA: beta-base), and the forums (AKA: Social Network). For those who use sites that are password protected, and use an Email that is password protected... And use the same password, and have accounts on Gmail, hotmail, AOL, quest, etc... Where there account is at "name@service.com" and password is the same for the sites and EMail... How did you think that would end? If I can hack one, I've got them all! Us a different password and/or username for your Email. The consumers union (Consumer Reports Magazine) lists social networking sites as the #1 source of bots, viruses, and other malware.

Hey folks, my gmail and yahoo accounts were indeed hacked, as well as my facebook. I don't know how the OP got emailed, but it was probably through the coat drive I put on a couple years ago, or when I was active with the Denver Climbers Coalition. Sorry for any inconvenience man. As for the hack, I was unable to regain control of either my FB page or my gmail account, but was able to get them both (I believe) deleted. The hackers are contacting friends of mine via yahoo chat and gmail primarily, but used FB a bit earlier. I use different passwords for everything, so I dunno how they got so much, but my attention was focused on locking down bank accts and credit cards before I even tried deleting those addresses. Hope this sheds some light and again, sorry to anyone who gets harrassed by this joker.

Sorry Ryan, but since I didn't know you, I had to ask. I knew it was a scam but didn't know by who...until I did the Google search, then I was sure it wasn't you. Hope this joker gets his nuts sliced off in a horrible accident.
