I'm getting it done tomorrow to open up my sinuses. It is suppose to take a week to recover and I hope to be climbing soon after. If you had it done how bad was it? How was the recovery. I guess I'm a bit nervous but it will be nice to not get sick so often.
Yogis use a salt water flush though the nasals to keep airways clean and flowing well. Yoga strengthens breathing, and encourages proper absorption and saturation of oxygen, and thus proper muscle function. Also, circular breathing is highly benficial for strengthening the tongue, and nasal muscles. One may make a didgeridoo from PVC and beeswax for about $15.
Hopefully, I can give you some useful advice. I have had surgery for my deviated septum twice. My first surgery was approximately 20 years ago and my most recent approximately 10 years ago (performed by two different physicians). The first procedure was pretty miserable since my sinus cavities were stuffed with gauze for about 4 days after the procedure. The second surgery/recovery went much smoother since they used splints to keep my sinuses open. The splints were removed after about one week? Hopefully, the procedure you will get uses the splint method.
During the surgery the only thing that might be of concern is your reaction to whatever drugs they use to "put you out". I remember having considerable headaches after my first procedure and very little after the second. Again, maybe the difference was the splinting process?
After each procedure I experienced a remarkable improvement in my efficiency of breathing. However, I must have a continual problem of cartilage re-growth as it seems like I could use the surgery again. Basically, one side of my sinus cavity always seems to be blocked. I've talked to others who have had the surgery and they do not seem to have the continual blockage issues that I do. So, maybe you will be one of the ones who has no problems once the surgery is completed?
I do think your recovery will be about one to two weeks before you will feel like getting back out and being active. I hope this is helpful and hope your recovery is easy.
I had deviated septum surgery back in '99. It's not really too bad.
The only advice I have is that if they give you a nasal spray (can't recall the name, but it's a mild steroid to help open the passages), be sure to use it diligently. It helps keep the passages as wide as possible when they heal.
It's hard to use since your nose will be sensitive and full of scabbing and other craziness, but be sure to do it.
