I am headed to Tonsai via Bangkok in about two weeks and am looking for hotel recommendations in Chinatown or the Khao San area. Also interested if anyone has stayed in hotels near the international airport and has recommendations. Thanks! Bart

Hey Bart, My wife and I stayed at New Siam 3 just off of Khao San. It was a little more expensive than surrounding places but worth it after dirt-bagging it around Tonsai. Much more modern and clean than other places we looked at, had AC and own private bathroom. If you spend some time in Bangkok and like vegetarian food, go to Mae Kadees (sp?). Best food we found in our travels and the cooking class was awesome. Dan

just go to Kho San road and find a place for 3$. If you want to step it up a bit you could find a really nice place in the area for 10$ a night. Dont waste time or energy on getting a place before you get there. This same information could be useful for Tonsai. I stayed at Tiew Khao for $1.50 a night, this was of course an extended stay. The year before I stayed at the Banyan Tree for 3$ a night. Have a swell time!

I agree with coreylee. If you're intent on going to Khao San, just go and look at places until you find one you like. The area is pretty small so you can cover it pretty quickly. That way you're not committed if you show up and find the place not quite what you expected. I'd advise against staying near the airport, unless you're turning around and leaving, say, the next morning. You'll have a clean bed but it'll lilkely be much more expensive and all the action will be quite a ways away. Sorry, only been to the Chinatown area in the evenings. I'd say just crack open a recent edition of lonely planet or rough guide to see what they recommend.

Oriental or Sukhothai... better views at Oriental and Lord Jims is my favorite resturant in the world. However, the Sukhothai does a great Sunday brunch and has amazing architecture. Also, the Celedon (at Sukhothai) is probably the best Thai food you will ever eat. However, they keep that place super cold... Honestly, if you have ever thought of splurging and trying out a world famous hotel, this is it.... THey have super deals going right now cus some of the BKK hotels have 5% occupancy.

This place is about a 15 min walk from Khao San Rd, but after all the concrete in Bangkok, I liked the teakwood ambiance of the place and it's a nice step up from the backpackers places. It's near a river taxi stop and there's a cool market nearby: shantilodge.com/

A friend of mine's favorite hotel in the World is the Oriental in Bangkok. Sounds nice, but I think Bangkok is such a cool city that you don't need to go big on your hotel to get full value.

My wife and I spent a few weeks at the Peachy Guesthouse about 4 years ago. It is across the street from the river, so transport is easy, and a couple blocks from Khao San, so you can get away from the madness. In the interest of full disclosure, we had been traveling in 3rd world countries for about 10 months, including the previous month in India, which might have colored our view of what was an acceptable hotel. It was dirt cheap <$5/night with AC, relatively clean, and had a good location. Probably not for the feint of heart, but if your budget is really tight and you have a spirit for adventure, then I would stay there again.

My general advise is to use the LP and tripadvisor.com If you want a nice hotel in Bangkok stay at the Imperial Queen's Park. It is a couple of blocks from the sky train in Sukhumvit. I would not recommend staying near the airport unless it is for an early morning departure. You are going to Thailand at the most popular time. All of the southern hemisphere is on Summer break. All of Northern Asia is looking for some sun so I advise that you book at least one night in advance in Bangkok and Ton Sai. Once on the ground you can shop around for other accommodation. You do not mention how long you are staying at Ton Sai. If it is only for a week or two I recommend staying in a little nicer accommodation. The cheap accommodation will be in high demand this time of year because some people stay for months. An ATM machine is available at Rai Lay. If you have a Capital One Money market account with an ATM card you will not pay any fees. If you have a Capital One Credit card you will not pay any foreign transaction fees. One last note: I recommend arriving into Krabi mid day. This will give you plenty of time to work your way to Ton Sai. It is no fun to be roaming around the jungle in the middle of the night looking for your hut. Have fun... My last visit was in May of 2008 and the time before that was 1999. The growth of Rai Lay and Ton Sai was overwhelming but still worth the visit. I recommend a couple of days at Ko Phi Phi Don. If the weather is bad at Ton Sai or if your looking to take a break from climbing I recommend Ko Pha Ngan and take a boat trip out to the Archipelago. Some of the most amazing scenery in all my worlds of travel. Make sure to do the climb to the top of the mountain to get the full view of the Archipelago.
