Posting new routes without a picture

If I am going to add a new route to a section I will absolutely not do it unless I have a picture of the route. Does anybody else feel like that too? I notice there are so many routes that don't have pictures and haven't for so long. It just seems incomplete to me. It shouldn't bother me but for some reason it does. A picture is worth a thousand words and a good picture is worth more. I guess I could just go out climb the routes, take pictures, post them, and stop bitching... if that's what I'm doing....yeah I think that's what I'm doing.

I would disagree to some extent. Some information is still better than no information and some people who are quite talented at writing route descriptions may not have pictures. It's quite easy for others to add pictures to the route later.

Still, people should do the best they can to create a complete entry and submitting a lame route description is just that.

Routes with pictures are great, but they're not necessarily better. I've seen plenty of route descriptions that don't really tell me much in terms of how to find it, what the pro is like, etc., and the accompanying photo(s) don't do anything to fill in the blanks. All things considered, I'd rather have a well-written route description and no photo than a poor description and a great photo.

I would disagree that one should always add a picture to a route they post. If you have a good picture, then by all means post up. However, I would rather see the space left blank until someone has a good picture to add than to see the space filled with a weak shot. Especially for the first pic on a page since it is displayed so prominently.

This was discussed a while back if you want to read other opinions.

I do agree that a page looks and feels better with a picture though. :)

Cheers,
Brad

Alot of the time that i get out it is not in a group. I think a shot of the leader from the view of the belayer is useless more often than not, plus it sucks to look at. I don't post butt shots for the main pic. A pic of the second from the leader is better. Also,(mainly with boulder problems) I want to see the whole or most of the line, not a portrait of the climber. We all love to look at our guns flexed on a tiny hold, but try taking a few steps back. This is not to say I haven't taken/posted a crap pic. Just want to rant.

bbrock thanks... I need to bitch a little.

We all need to bitch sometimes. It's one of the things I'm best at. I'm also very good at not doing anything about what I'm bitching about.

I would think anyone with the knowledge of a route to post it most likely has climbed it and should in fact have a photo of it.
I would think they went hand and hand. At least hike back and take a shot from far away. I guess cameras may be just like cell phones these days. Not everyone has them but should and will.
I like photos with the route espeically to help with the approach and actual route description.

Was discussed once before.

I'm one of the dinosaurs I guess- I only shoot slide film. I scan some of my slides in, but at a few per dollar, I don't usually go taking pictures of everything. Probably only 1/2 of the ~100 FA's I've reported on the site.

Notably however, MOST submissions I've made in the ~1000 routes on this forum, other people have put in good photos of. Kinda cool.

Most of the new routes I've put in have been with a photo. I've even made a point to go back to some things specifically to get a MP photo, sometimes before posting it and sometimes after.

But I also add things without photos, and guess what....about half the time someone else puts a photo in shortly after the new route shows up. Plenty of people out there have pics and remember it once they see the route in the database but might not think to add the route of their own accord.

Seems like a pretty fucking petty gripe to me. Not everyone carries a camera on/to every route. And I'd rather have some decent directions of how to get to something, the gear beta, and what the climbing is like instead of having nothing while someone waits to get a pic. This goes double for new routes that aren't in any guide.

So qwicherbitchin.

Hmmm. true. I do try to snap a pic when I do something really obscure, if opportunity presents IE: Dreadnaught, Under The Influence, 3rd Time is a Charm, Muscle and Hate, Tommy Gun, etc...

But if I don't have the camera or the angle or film to burn, I leave it and do my best to describe. Admittedly, there are some lame-o descriptions that don't carry without a photo.

But I guess I figure in conclusion that if it is obscure, then nobody else will post it anyway. Ad if it is common, someone else will have a picture. Either way, the pic can appear as soon as someone takes one, and until then, at least some beta is on line.

Perhaps in the event of multiple photos of a route, the highest-rated photo attached to that route should be displayed with the route description. This way, should a really good photo be initially be uploaded for a route, it could still be replaced by a really GREAT photo. The shitty photos will eventually just naturally sink to the bottom...

You're on to something here Mr. Finger. Same goes for an area or STATE photo. Some states have a really cool photo or a good map. I'm getting tired of the Utah photo. Red rocks may represent a portion of the state, but

ain't the greatest photo IMHO to represent Utah. Some way to vote for or rotate photos on these pages would be good.

Yeah yeah...whatever. The reason for this post is to try and motivate people to add pictures with new routes that they enter,to help people remember to take their camera with them when they go climbing. I moved to a place where there is no climbing for hours due to job training. During the week, pictures and training are all I have in the way of getting my climbing fix, so I might be more motivated in that sense than someone who lives with climbing surrounding them...maybe...whatever...anyway. So to all you bitches out there bitchin because I'm bitchin....step off bi-atch!!!!! Have fun, climb hard, push your limits, and snap a couple pics

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
