Description
Clinetop is a lesser known area containing a few crags way up on the hillside that are technically in East Elk but approached via Main Elk Road which turns into Clinetop Road. The road is closed typically from mid November to mid-May. It can get dicey in late October if the snow starts falling before it closes. 4WD is not a necessity unless it is indeed covered in snow and mud. High clearance is also not needed.
Getting There
From New Castle, drive NorthWest on County Road 245/Grass Valley road until you reach Main Elk Road, turn right (the only option), and stay on it for about 20 minutes. This road will turn into Clinetop once it turns to dirt. The second parking lot on the left with the Forest Service sign is the trailhead for Main Elk, Fortress of Solitude, Burro Wall, Pup Tent, and Chamber of Secrets climbing areas. The rest of the crags here are approached by staying on this road for about 20 minutes or more. Per AndySalo: it should be noted that the road closes just past the main Main Elk parking in late November and doesn’t reopen until May.
