Description
Beaver Brook (also known as Hardy Road) is one of the very few sport climbing spots in the ADK. The rock is reminiscent of the King Wall, but less monolithic. The rock is generally good quality, but don't be surprised to find a little crumbly rock here and there, especially on the new routes. There's a fair amount of variation here, from vertical face climbing on black rock with crisp edged holds to overhanging light gray rock with wild jugs. You'll even find a roof or a trad climb here and there.
The number of routes has nearly tripled in the fall of 2024, and much of the new development is a new school sport climbing dream for the 5.10-5.11 climber. The left end is steep, well bolted, and the falls are clean. A stick clip might be a good idea!
The cliff faces South/Southeast, and is a great place to hide on crispy fall days and soak up the sun. The bugs can be especially nasty here given the bog below in the valley. The best climbing here is in the fall. There are some poison ivy and ticks around, so pants are recommended.
Getting There
Park at Hardy Road pull off (for mtn biking trails) in Wilmington. Head west on the trail for .3 of a mile until you see a cairn on your right. Turn right and have a light stroll through a pleasant grassy hardwood/cedar forest. As you head uphill, stay right of the talus filled gully until you reach the cliff band, and then follow the cliff band as it gets taller and more impressive. It's a very easy 15-20 minute hike.
