Description
The Rotwand (Roda di Vael) has routes on both its east and west faces. The west face has a number of classic routes, including the Dibona route. This face was considered one of the last great faces in the Dolomites to be climbed.
Getting There
Roda di Vael has routes on the west and eastern faces. The west face routes are approached from the lift in Carezza which takes one to Rifugio Paolina. East face routes can be approached one of two ways. The first way is to take the Paolina lift (out of Carezza) to Rifugio Paolina and then hike for about 45 minutes to Rifugio Roda di Vael. This lift eliminates a long hike with a lot of elevation gain. This approach has the added benefit of permiting one to hit both the east and west faces of the Rotwand in one trip. The second approach is to hike from Vigo di Fassa to Rifugio Roda di Vael (3 hours + elevation). Or, take the lift out of Viga di Fassa to the Ciampedie Rifugio. From here hike west toward Rifugio Roda di Vael (about 45 minute hike).
