Description Suggest change

Battle Wall is in the gully below the Gallery at Second Pullout. This is the gully that often draws uninitiated approachers (to the Gallery) who miss the scramble up onto the ledge that forms its west/left side. It offers several routes characterized by low-angle climbing with an occasional steeper bulge. Slabs, corners, flakes and varnish features make for interesting, if relatively short, climbs. A 40m rope and 8 quickdraws plus anchor is sufficent for this area.

The area receives lots of sun and late afternoon shade, though the base area is only in the sun for a couple hours. This is a good spot for those seeking more moderate grades near the Gallery/Wall of Confusion. There are more moderates on the other end of the gully in the corridor below the Observatory (see that area if desired).

This is a newly developed area. It was thoroughly cleaned but exercise caution and watch for loose/fragile rock.

Getting There Suggest change

Battle Wall is located just below the Gallery, a very popular crag in Calico Hills. From the Second Pullout parking, head down the trail and stay left at the switchback (onto the Grand Circle Loop trail) going up and over a hill. When the trail reaches the first of two large dead trees just before the wash, drop into and cross the wash, then scramble up towards the cliffs looking for a notch near the base of the cliff. (Note, for the Gallery, scramble left along the ridge/ledges just before the notch.) Pass through this notch and enter the gully. Follow an obvious trail northwest/left about 100’ to the first routes at a shallow right-facing corner. The rest of the routes are further along the gully, also on the right.

To access the Gallery/Wall of Confusion areas from Battle Wall, it’s possible to scramble up onto the ledge system across the gully from the climbs. The easiest spot, marked with a cairn (it won’t last), is across from the start of the "Battle” routes, or head back through the notch and follow the usual Gallery approach.

To access the Observatory corridor climbs, head back south towards the notch and continue in the gully until it narrows to an obvious corridor. Look for bolts on the left side of the corridor.
