Description Suggest change

Wetterhorn is one of the five 14'ers usually accessed from Lake City, SW of Gunnison. Wetterhorn, Uncompahgre, and the 13'er Matterhorn Peak are clearly visible from many San Juan summits, and a very reasonable day's effort allows one to summit beautiful Wetterhorn.

Getting There Suggest change

From west of Gunnison, go south on CO149 for 45 miles to Lake City. Turn right off CO149 in Lake City, and follow the signs for Engineer Pass. Proceed west on Henson Creek Road (Hinsdale County 20) for 9.2 miles. The road is easily passable for passenger cars to this point.

Turn right here onto North Hensom Creek Road for 2 miles to the Matterhorn Creek trailhead at 10,400 feet. The condition of this road is variable. On my first trip there 15 years ago, I barely made it in a passenger car and actually did some minor damage to the car. About five years later, I made it easily in the same vehicle. With a high clearance vehicle, this road would be easy.

There is dispersed camping along this two mile section but not along Henson Creek Road.
