Description
This is likely one of the last undeveloped goldmines of Central Virginia. Below the main cliffline at the very top of Forge Mountain, is a talus field containing blocks and walls that will sometimes remind you of Rocklands, South Africa. Bring your navigation skills, an exceedingly solid headgame, and a lot of brushes. I am pretty sure all of this is unexplored territory because the last party to find this area stopped at the Forge Area. If the oldheads found it they didn't do anything up here because all of the best stuff are hard boulders. With love and time this place will make an excellent day trip.
Getting There
Beta map is attached. Park across the street from the gravel entrance to the Goshen Pass Natural Area Preserve. This is the Forge Mountain Trailhead. The trail will take you to the Forge Area, then ends. The trail is marked with white blazes the entire way. The Promised Land is pretty much directly below the Forge Area in a massive talus field. It is unclear how best to navigate getting there from above--be very careful. The approach is 1 mile and 1,000ft of elevation gain. In other words, its short but an ass-kicker of an approach--1/4 of the Priest hike if you will.
