Rurutu Climbing

The island of Rurutu is in the Austral Island group, about 350 miles to the south of Tahiti. From a tourism perspective, the island is perhaps best known for the snorkeling with humpback whales and their calves that occurs in the fall (August-October).

Rurutu does have some rock and a few easy routes were established in 2023. Like the island of Ua Pou, most of Rurutu is private property. Some of the cliffs are on private property and some are on public property. In order to climb in either situation, permission must be obtained beforehand. What is allowed on public land is ultimately decided by the island's mayor.
