Description
French Polynesia is perhaps best known for the islands of Bora Bora and Tahiti. For climbers, the islands of Makatea and Ua Pou could be of interest.
Makatea is part of the Tuamotus Islands and has roughly 100 sport routes from French grade 3b to 8b+. A pdf guidebook to the sport climbing on Makatea was produced in 2019 by French climbers and an island resident, Heitapu Mai (the son of the island's mayor).
Ua Pou (pronounced "Wah-po"), in the Marquesas Islands, has huge jungle towers and some sea cliff climbing. Most of the towers were first acended by German climbers in the late 1980s and 1990s.
Getting There
You will likely fly to Papeete on the island of Tahiti (airport code PPT). There are direct flights from Los Angeles (airport code LAX) to PPT on Air France and Air Tahiti Nui.
From Papeete, you would then take short flights to islands near Makatea and Ua Pou. From these intermediate stops, boats can be taken to your destination.
