Burnwood Boulders Suggest change

This small, yet unique bouldering area is situated at the Burnwood Campsite, just across Highway 19 from the New River Gorge National Park Canyon Rim Visitor Center.  If you're planning on visiting the area with a group of 8 or more, you might inquire about a camping permit.  For locals, Burnwood Boulders is an excellent choice for those quick lunch or afterwork sessions.  Please be careful of broken glass in the bouldering areas as it was common to dump garbage in the 'backwoods' prior to the establishment of the Park.

The bouldering area is located just downhill from the obvious picnic shelter located at Burnwood.  If there are people camping, please be courteous and use the gravel lot near the restrooms.  Burnwood Boulders are also within hiking distance from the American Alpine Club Campground.  In fact, a popular bouldering circuit exists from the AAC Campground to Tuggin' Shack, to Ronski-Feint area, to Burnwood, and ambitious folks might find the path downhill from 'When Kermit Goes Green' and link in the bouldering at Bridge Buttress for an adventurous backwoods day.  To find your way back to the AAC Campground, NRAC in partnership with NPS established a climber's trail at Bridge Buttress, that leads back to Ronski-Feint by hiking climber's left from Bridge Buttress following a stone and dirt path uphill.

From the NPS website

Burnwood is located across Route 19 from Canyon Rim Visitor Center and offers group camping. This site is only for groups of 8 or more people and requires a Special Use Permit. For a permit for the group campsites, contact the permits office at 304-465-6517. Permits require a minimum of 10 business days after the application has been received.

Burnwood Old Growth Forest Hiking Trail

Suggest change

The information provided below is quoted directly from the New River Gorge National Park & Preserve's website on Burnwood Trail:

This 1.2 mile loop trail leads through old-growth forest and rhododendron thickets. In August 2023, the Old-Growth Forest Network added Burnwood to its network forests. Some trees found along the trail date back to the 17th century. Old course woody debris litters the forest floor. These old-growth characteristics give a unique charm not found in most of the park.

The trail then follows the edge of an open field, loops back through the forest, and returns to the field. This area was a former home site of the Laing family. It's their farm that helped protect the old-growth forest from logging and industry. Hikers may glimpse clues of this history can along the trail.

A self-guided hike of the old-growth forest is available on the NPS Mobile App or on the park website. More information about old-growth forest is also available here.
