Description
Ossipee Mountains ring dike complex is an amazing geologic feature and a member of the younger White Mountain igneous province. Anything that mentions volcanoes and gas vents definitely peaks my interest! The complex is circular in plan view and has a diameter of 8.7 miles. The almost outer ring-dike forms a ridge around the inner basin on the eastern side and forms the outer slopes of the high hills in the western part of the complex. Much of the ring-dike consists of medium to coarse grained quartz syenite but locally pink medium to fine grained granite and/or porphyritic rhyolite are important components. Most of the rock in the Bayle area is extremely rough and suffering from this medium to coarse grained curse. Unfortunately this detracts from the quality of many problems so come prepared with some thick skin. It is a haven for gem hunters looking for smokey quartz and their handiwork can be found throughout the mountains. The Ossipee ring dike is a classic example of a ring-dike complex. I believe it is the only one on of its kind on the east coast.
The rock is sharp, the woods are thick and the bugs rival Pawtuckaway in bad years. That being said the climbing is pretty good with some very scattered large erratics throughout the woods. Certainly not a destination spot but some fun adventure bouldering on some pretty unique stone. The land owner has been extremely receptive in dealing with the increase of traffic over the years including many improvements with the parking. Please obey all signage, keep a low profile and if you see any trash be a good steward and help keep the area clean. Big shout out to Jonathon Garlough for showing me this spot and Pete Otis for the inspiration in hunting for new and unclimbed blocks. There is still so much unexplored climbing in Northern New England you just got to dig deep!!!
Getting There
From Rt 16 in Ossipee turn southwest onto Pine Hill Rd(across from Pizza Barn). Please use caution and drive slow as the roads are mostly dirt and have narrow sections. Drive 3.4 miles then bear right onto Connor Pond Road as Ossipee Mountain Road comes in from the left. Continue 0.6 miles, passing a boat launch on Connor Pond and bear right just before wooden bridge onto Marble Road. Continue 0.7 miles to a point just before another bridge(do not cross bridge private property) and park at designated hiker pull-off on the right. Parking for @6 cars and if lot is full please consider going elsewhere. See Map
