Description Suggest change

Azure is a small mountain located in the Northern stretch of the Adirondack Park. There are many rock, ice, and mixed climbing opportunities here. There are many established routes as well as opportunities for exploratory route or mountaineering adventures. The view of the High Peaks from the summit can also be inspiring on a clear day.

Getting There Suggest change

Azure Mountain is accessed from Blue Mountain Road, which you get onto from highway 458, from the north it's a 7 mile drive about 1/2 paved and 1/2 dirt. Blue Mountain Rd can also be accessed from Paul Smiths, but is much longer and slower. The first of the climbing can be reached within 25 minutes from the trailhead. Getting to the main face takes an additional 20-30 minutes in good conditions.

From the maintained parking lot (used by trail hikers), take the main trail, past the register for 7-8 minutes, (1/3 of a mile) to the remains of a stone chimney, right by a small stream (often dry). Take the well-established herd path at a 10:00 o clock direction for 10 minutes where you'll cross 2 wet gullies before turning right and going uphill.

The Equinox Face is 5 minutes above you (with a trail), the Main Face is still 20 minutes away. There is a rough trail that skirts the rough hillside talus field, try to stay low for a faster hike. Lots of huge mossy boulders if anyone is interested in new boulder problems. After 20 minutes you'll see the huge Main Face, "warning", the talus at the base of the main face is nasty, dangerous and may remind you of Cannon's talus fields.

The trail from Equinox to the Main Face is poorly maintained, and don't be surprised if it "disappears" on you. If it does just bushwack hooking right all the time following the contour of Azure mountain.
