Description
Lakeview is a fun, scrappy little limestone cliff that sits above Vallecito Reservoir. The rock here is different in character from the other limestone crags around Durango. There are currently around 25 established routes. The climbing is mostly moderate (5.8 - 5.11) and well-bolted. The views are outstanding, and the approach is less than 10 minutes. The crag faces mostly northwest and gets morning shade and afternoon sun. There are still routes in development, but most have been climbed and cleaned. That being said, this is a newish area and holds continue to break, so helmets are recommended.
Getting There
Follow CR 501 to just before Vallecito Reservoir, and turn right onto FR 603 (at Upper Pine River Fire Protection Station #2). FR 603 is closed seasonally at the gate near the Old Timers Campground from December 1st - May 1st. Pass under the dam, and continue around the east side of the reservoir to North Canyon Campground. Turn right onto FR 852, and follow it to its end and a small parking area. The cliff is visible from here, and there is a cairned trail leading to the base near Wilderness Therapy and Pest Control.
